DEPARTMENT DECIDES ON 1 NEW ALLOCATION SYSTEM Hope Scheme Will Provide Maximum Channels With Minimum Interference.
Bu Times Special WASHINGTON, Feb. 6.—-The Department of Commerce has finally decided on a scheme for the allocation of wave lengths to class B broadcasting stations which, It Is hoped, will provide the maximum of channels with minimum interference. Under the new allocation plan, no general rule has been followed. The allocation of wave length to each station Is based almost entirely on tests which tend to show that satisfactory service will result. Under the plan, the wave length of many of the class B stations are changed to some extent. The one failure of the new plan is that it does not provide new channels. To obtain such a result, however, was not anticipated. Therefore, the problem of the department in finding new channels for new stations which are either under construction or anticipated remains as pressing as ever.

There are nc more thaj> a dozen amateur receiving sets in Russia. This is due to nonmanufacture of home wireless apparatus; to the prohibitive duty on imported sets; to the Russian peasejii’s ignorance of what wireless means, and to the reluctance of the Soviet Government to permit the indiscriminate use of radio apparatus which might be used for espionage purposes. The giant radio station at Koenigswusterhausen, Germany, operates with twenty-one independent units.
There are forty-seven channels under the new plan. With each station dividing time two ways, ninety-four stations can be accommodated. More than 105 stations are in sight. “The class B band extends from 280 to 545,” said Chief Radio Supervisor Terrell. “We cannot go above 545 because of interference from code. We can place only so many stations between 280 and 545. Therefore, we must go down.” The difficulty about going down is that many receivers will not tune in wave lengths below 233 or 250 meters and around 400 class A stations must be crowded in between 200 and 280. If the class B stations could be placed as low as 235 and the class A below that, the solution of the problem would be easy. Here is a list of class B broadcasting stations, showing wave length in meters, frequency in kilocycles, call letters and location, not including Pacific coast stations, as authorized under the new allocation plan:
Under revised regulations governing amateur radio station operations recently issued by the commerce department, amateurs must cease using the wave-length band between 105 and 110 meters. The Federal Government purchases annually more than 100,000 vaouum tubes of different types, most of which are used by the Army ami Navy. Spain has fewer than 100 amateur radio transmitting stations.
