Starring five miles east of El Tovar at Yaqui point, the trail is easier in its descent than others now being used. It terminates at the suspension bridge over the Colorado, and connects with trails into Bright Angel canyon. $7 MONEY TO LOAN Personal Loans $lO to S3OO This office is operated under the supervision of the state of Indiana and wae established for the purpose of providing a place where honest people can borrow any amount from $lO to S3OO without pay In? more than the legal rate of interest or without being imposed upon in any way. poria. In his own colorful language he tells the story of his arrival: “I had $1.25 in my pockets and $3,000 worth of debts when I got off the train. Now, my father was a New England Yankee and my mother a pure-bred Irish woman. "The Yankee said to me, ‘Walk up to the hotel. You can’t afford a cab.’ ‘But the Irishman said, Wurra! You can’t afford not to hire a cab. Emporia must not see you making your triumphal entry •without some style.’ "I rode, and it cost me 60 cents. “When Sally came down a few weeks later, I had scraped together several more dollars, and I hired a cab for her, too.” That has beeri the way all through the spectacular rise of William Allen White, from debtridden country editor to man of property, editor of one of the most distinctive dailies in the Middle West, author of a dozen successful books and general idol of Kansas.

FREE BRAKE USE CAUSE OF MANY SKIDDING CRASHES Keep Clutch In and Apply Brakes Slowly, Is Advice. Motorists use their brakes too liberally. That's the chief cause for skidding. An automobile will skid on slippery pavement when the front wheels are turned the slightest out of the for. ward direction, the clutch is out and the brakes are applied. The back wheels, supporting: the heavier half of the auto in most cases, become locked, cannot hold against the pave* ment, and carry the car on In the original direction regardless of front wheel direction. Even when the front wheels are directed straight forward, if the car is riding along on a slippery road that slopes to a ditch, releasing the clutch and applying the brakes mean danger. The back of the car in this case takes the easiest course—toward the ditch—and the best driver can’t stop such a slide once It'g started. Slopes Dangerous Here lies the real danger. ists a’s told to steer their cars 14 the dircc'ion of the skid. But if tha car is skidding toward a ditch, an£ the motorist tries to steer his caf that way he is sure to go in, on< way or the other. There is no excuse from such 4 skid. There is a preventive, as therd is for any kind of skid. That is—drive carefully, tur4 slowly with clutch in, keep the en gine pulling the car, apply thd brakes slowly and carefully. With the clutch engaged, the eng gine controls the car. Brakes may then be applied, easily, without let* ting out the clutch. Then, if thS rear does begin to skid, the engine will keep the wheels turning in an effort to drive them out of the skid,* Taking Curves Curves should be taken with the clutch engaged, and the gears in second, or low. The brakes need not be touched. If the car is going at a good rate of speed an! necessity for slowing up or stopping is seen ahead, take your foot off the throttle and let the* engine slow- up the car. The brakes may ~be applied and released with short, easy strokes of the pedal. But the clutch should remain in until the driver is certain just another slight touch of the brake pedal would bring the car to a stop. The best precaution against ding is to avoid a sudden ohange in direction. Turns should be made slowly and as widely as possible. In Emergencies If the emergency arises at which a sudden turn must be made, take your foot off the throttle and apply both brakes, emergency and sendee while the clutch is still engaged. You will skid, but not as much as you would if the clutch were out. Don't try to shift suddenly into low or reverse. There would be nothing left of your gears if you did. Keep shy of Btreet car tracks, but if you happen to slide into them, this is how to get out: Slow down, shift Into low gear, and when you have clear space to right and left of you, suddenly swerve your wheels to the right. You will skid a little, hut not enough to harm, and the car will be out of the tracks.
AMERICAN MOVIES PUZZLE GERMANS ■ 1 ’ i>, 4: | Foreign Producers Resenl U, S. Invasion, , ■ Bv United Prett WASHINGTON, Feh. fcr-dLmerl/ can movies, which make tip three* fourths of those shown ln Germany, have brought German film producers, Importers and distributers into a hot controversy, the depart* ment of commerce was advised by its Berlin representative. Distributors sometimes require premiums of $5,000 to $6,000 to( place American films on their lists, totally eliminating the profits of the . Importers, who are protesting vigorously. The producers who make about 100 pictures & year are demanding that stricter import regulations be imposed to give them a larger share of the German business. About 800 American films are Imported annual* ly at present, and it is claimed that Germany could use 600 if the distributors’ premiums were eliminated. Exhibitors are dissatisfied because the present "contingent system’* similar to the block-booldng practices used elsewhere require them to accept programs as a unit. Instead of selecting their own features and showing individual programs. A general meeting of the German film industry will be held soon to discuss a tentative program providing for a fixed ration between foreign and domestic pictures, to prevail for at least two years. The German government so far has not taken sides with any of the partlsd to the controversy. fe - - --1 Polite Kidnaper HULL, England—*'A strong sfisntl man” kidnaped a young womara here one night after a dance.
