TAX RECEIPTS IN INDIANADECREASE Collections 10 Per Cent Smaller Than in 1923. Bv Timet BveciaX WASHINGTON, Jan. 29. —ln di&na taxpayers paid $42,004,925.60 to the Federal Government during 1924, according to the Bureau of In ternal Revenue. In 1923 payments •were nearly 10 per cent larger, amounting to $46,417,165.91. Statistics show Indiana ranking thirteenth in the amount of taxes paid by the various States. Those ahead are New York, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Illinois, North Carolina Ohio, California, Massa uhusetts New Jersey, Missouri, Maryland, in eluding the District of oClumbia and Virginia. Os the total Indiana .taxes las year, $26,148,173 was in the form o income taxes and the remaindt miscellaneous taxes. In 1923 th Hoosier income taxes total t $26,323,657 ;mlscellaneous, $20,147,50b For the United States as a whole taxes collected in 1924, were $lO5, 850,631 less than in 1923. Totals it, 1924 was $2,688,045,621. FRIENDS PREFER COURT Effort Made to Withdraw Denton Pe tit ion From Assembly. Friends of George K. Denton, de seated Democratic candidate foi judge of the Supreme Court, ar> seeking to withdraw the petition filed by E. C. Day, Kokomo, with the General Assembly, alleging it regularities and malconduct in can vasa of the vote in Denton’s race against Judge Benjamin M. Wllloughly, Vincennes Republican. Attorneys for Denton declare th petition was filed without their con sent and through the backing of th> Indiana Anti-Saloon League, and they prefer to take their chances t: court action now pending. It is pointed out that Denton could not benefit by the action before the Legislature in that the joint legis lative committee has power only to declare a vacancy. In this case the Governor would appoint a judge. INJURIES PROVE FATAL Pedestrian Dies After Being Struck by Auto Tuesday. James Hudson, 35, of 917 Elm St. died at city hospital early today from injuries received when he wastruck by a machine at New Jersey St. and Virginia Ave. Tuesday. Hudson, who was crossing the street, was struck by a machine driven by Emil Leppert, 25, of 1621 S. Talbott Ave. Hudson was not identified until a friend called at the hospital Wednesday. Leppert will be reslated on an in voluntary manslaughter charge, police say. TOASTMASTER SELECTED Dick Miller to reside at C. of C. Dinner for Salesmen. Dick Miller, president of City Trust Company, will be toastmaster at a Chamber of Commerce dinner for more than 200 traveling salesmen of Indianapolis wholesale firms Friday night. Frank S. Fish back, president, will open the meeting. C. B. Crets of Van Camp Hardware and Iron Company has charge of arrangements A. K. Meyer is chairman of the wholesale trade division, which is sponsoring the dinner. Prof. George Tapy of Wabash Colege and T. A. Lowery of Chicago Herald and Examiner will speak. Liberty Market Sold Purchase of the Liberty Market, grocery at 360-340 E. Washington St., by Colan C. Schaefer, Richmond, Ind.. from the Liberty Market Cor pomtion was announced today. He will operate the place under the same name.
