Martinsville I The north side basket team, by its thirteen straight wins, has put a zest in athletics at the local school which has been lacking for many years.

And now the big test is Just ahead. The Blue and White is going to play the State champs at Martinsville, Friday night. Will Shortrldge rooters be on hand? Nothing could stop them. By special cars and autos the students are going. The Blue and White boys have won every game and have taken Shortrldge out of the valley of defeat up to the heights of victory. Coach Burton has been drilling his players hard this week for the coming battle. • £ s j ,|i . The Outcome? Fans more or less disinterested in the result are divided on the outcome of the game. Martinsville has met many moi-e strong clubs than Shortrldge and has shown a dazzling brand of stuff. It seems as though the Artesian City Club has the edge. But who knows? A team that gets started is sometimes hard to stop. Maybe the Indianapolis outfit is better than it has been given credit for. Friday will tell the tale. And hundreds of Shortrldge followers will be either sad or glad. Special cars will leave at 6 p. m. Friday from the traction' station. Interurban “special” pickets and game admissions can be obtained at Shortrldge. The sale is open to the public. FARRELL United Prett Staff Correspondent NEW YORK, Jan. 28.—Charlie Paddock and Loren Murchison ought to take on Paavo Nurmi now and see what they can do with him. The flying Finn has done everything now but beat our American sprinters.

Nurmi turned in the most impressive race of his career Tuesday night when he ran four of America’s best middle-distance men "through the track’’ and won the three-quarter-mile race in the world’s record time of 3:03 4-5. It was the thirteenth world’s record he has made since he arrived in this country. Nurmi trailed Jole Ray, Lloyd Hahn, Jimmy Connolly and Leo Larrivee until the bell sent the field Into the final lap. The Finn then cut loose with a tremendous burst of speed and brought ten tho .sand spectators to their feet shrieking wildly as he broke the tape ten yards ahead of Ray, who had not been beaten at that distance In five years. Try Everything The well-known "works" was tried on P iavo In a desperate attempt for an American victory. The change of pace was tried against the Olympic hero on the theory that he couldn’t do his stuff unless he could set his own methodical and perfectly timed pace. Ray went out like a flash in the lead and his three mates tried to keep Nurmi away from him. They pocketed him and elbowed him on the turns and tried to run hlxp out. But whan Nurmi decided to go out, he went out and mowed down the field.

Willie Ritola, Finnish rival of Nurmi, made his ninth world's record In four days. In the three-mile race he made anew world’s record of 14:04, beating the mark of 14:11 2-5 which he made last Saturday night. He also made new marks for 2%, 2Mi and 2% miles, bettering the five previous marks he had made last Saturday. Harold Osborne, Olympic and world’s champion high Jumper, made anew indoor record when he went over the bar at 6 feet and 6*4 Inches. The captions had been especially prepared—‘‘Cowardly Flight,” “Cold Feet,” ‘Afraid,” etc. Then Paul Fritch substituted for Dundee against Fred Bretonnel and easily outpointed him.' Bretonnel fought like a third-rater and would have been easy for Dundee on Tuesday night’s form. Edouard Mascart, European featherweight champ, sent a challenge to Louis (Kid) Kaplan for a bout for the world’s championship after knocking out Danny Frush in the second round. The meet, will continue through Friday and Saturday, with the finals Saturday night.
