SLAYING OCCURS IN DANCE NALL Man ‘Shoots Up’ Place — ' Kills One, Bu United Press EDWARDS SGLLE, lIL, Jan. 23. Special guards surround Louis McLain in the county jail today following his shooting spree Thursday -light, which resulted in one man being killed and other wounded. The shooting occured in the Valley Park pavilion, a dance "hall, near Alton. After the shooting, McLain was brought here as officials feared mob action. The man killed was Larrison, popular deputy sheriff of the county, and the wounded man is Walter Baird. Baird is not expected to live. The orchestra had just started the prize waltz when McLain dashed on the floor, flashing two heavy automatic pistols. He weaved through the dancing crowd and started in true western style to "shoot up” the place. DAVIS WAIVES HEARING Early Trial Expected for Former Kansas Governor and Son. Bv United Press TOPEKA, Kans., Jan. 23—With waiving of preliminary hearing, former Governor Jonathan Davis and his son, Russell, charged with .conspiracy and acceptnig a bribe from a former convict, are expected to be given an early trial. Ffahbaek Invites Salesmen Frank S. Fishback, new president of Chamber of Commerce, has written letters to wholesale houses and manufacturers inviting salesmen who travel out of Indianapolis to attend a dinner, under auspices of wholesale trade division, next Friday night. Prof. George Tapy, Wabash College, and T. A. Lowery of Chicago Herald and Examiner, are among speakers. Senator Holmes Exchange Speaker Senator C. O. Princess Suad Chakir, formerly Mrs. J. D. Spreckles, Jr., of California, is named as co-respondent in the divorce suit of Princess Chivekiar of Egypt against her husband, Capt. Selyom Bey, a Turkish army officer. Princess Chivekiar says her husband and the former Mrs. Spreckles went for a long moonlight yacht ride, unchaperoned. GERMAN MINERS KILLED Seven Die When Damp Gas Explosion Occurs. By United Press BERLIN, Jan. 23. —Seven miners are dead as a result of an explosion of damp gas in a mine near Bochum, twenty-six miles northeast of Dusseldorf. Shipping Meet at Terre Haute R. B.
