BUDGET FOR ROAD BOARDPROTESTED Proposal Seen as Danger to Good Highways, - Proposal to placa the Indiana State highway cpmmission under the budget requirements is viewed by some good roads enthusiasts as a scheme to revert part of the money from the gasoline tax and automobile licenses to the general fund, it was learned today. Such reversion would aia in lifting the $3,400,000 debt now on the general fund, and would tend to give leeway for reduction of the State tax rate at the expense of highways, it is pointed out. The exact amount of the gasoline tax and automobile licenses collected annually cannot be known in advance. Placing the highway department under the budget system, then, would mean that. the appropriation could be fixed and that if the tax exceeded the appropriation, it could be reverted to the general fun, or remain unused. The commission now operates under its own budget system. Any attempt to change its operations will be met with stubborn opposition from Legislators enthusiastio about Indiana roads, it is understood.
