Glyn Teaches Parlor Sheiks Tricks; Corinne Finds Lovin 9 a Lonely Job
By WALTER D. HICKMAN PTARLOR sheiks may learn some new tricks in the art J of caveman love making this week. The ‘‘school” is being conducted at the Apollo this week, where Elinor Glyn’s ‘‘His Hour” is being flashed upon the screen. I H v that lit■\v, erary person who has grown finanman u f acturing such bedtime V, ' f; was ever dreamed ¥ V' Weeks” and "His lliPfi§iiiiSifp mantic hash that it seems to be an to manufacture * AILEEN more of the PRINGLE same brand. And she will as long as the public will buy the stuff. "His Hour” is silly bunk as far as my standards of literature and entertainment are concerned. But remember, I am just one in a million. Yesterday, the Apollo was packed when I entered to take my dose of Glynism. I thought I was seeing a comedy or a travesty on the art of love making, but I found out I was all wrong. Several of the feminine representatives present soon convinced me by their sighs and groans that I was witnessing drama. Everytime that John Gilbert applied the sixtv-seven second kiss to the lips of Aileen Pringle, a regular gasp swept over the audience. I laughed out loud, but by the looks hurled at me by those who paid their way, I soon came to the conclusion that “serious” (?) drama was being offered. * For the life of me, I can’t swallow this brand of Glyn’s so-called romance. If I didn’t possess a sense of humor, I wouldn't be telling you about this picture today. But—when the week is over the management of the Apollo will be happy. Elinor Glyn knows how to write the stuff that will sell and the dope that can be filmed. Put Glyn’s name to anything in the story line and it'will be a best seller. To me such stories as "His Hour” are silly bunk. Be your own judge. Just try to get r. seat at the Apollo this week. In fairness to the movie, it lias been marvelously photographed. The bill includes a comedy, “Just a Good Guy,” and organ and orchestral music. At the Apollo all week. -I- -I- -ICORINNE IS LONELY WHEN SHE IS IN LOVE Some of our modern movie heroines are mighty lonely when they are in love. The reason seems to be that they marfy the wrong guy in the stories, thus making B everybody miserable until the last few feet of the film. Corinne Griffith/as Linda Lou Heath married the wrong chap. She should have married David Tennant right in the beginning, but Paul ' „ L’Estrange had the moonlight ' stuff down pat ’ and so she married Paul, while CORINNE David wtas in the GRIFFITH jungle. Paul was a bad egg and he deserted Linda just before the baby was going to arrive. A lie is framed to make Linda believe that her husband has been killed but in fact he became a modem pirate and got arrested and sentenced for life to a French convict camp on a lonely

tropical island. After Linda’s marriage to David, she discovers that Paul is a convict. This happens in '"Love’s Wilderness.” a melodrama now on view at the Circle. The tropical scenes with its terrible storm, its alligator and deadly snakes puts some good thrills in the story. The mechanics of this movie have been well worked out. Rather too melodramatic at times but possesses a certain punch that melodmmas always haye. Cast is as follows: Linda Lou Heath Corinne Griffith David Tennant Holmes S. Herbert Paul L'Estrang-e lan Keith Pierre Bazin Maurice Cannon Matt da Heath Emily Fitzroy Prudence Heath Anne Schaefer Colonel Mosely Bruce Covington The Governor ' David Torrence Van Arsdale Frank Elliot Captain Moreau Adolph Millar Jubilo Jim Blackwell During part of the picture, Dessa Byrd handles the big pipe organ in splendid style. At one time I became so interested in the work of the organist that my attention lefi: the screen for a second. Bakaleinikoff as usual has put a surprise in the overture. This week it is the soothing Oriental thing called "L’Orentale.” Splendidly played. The surprise comes in by Bakaleinikoff jazing up the ending in syncopated time. Short featuies make up the rest of the bill. At the Circle all week. -I- -I- -INOAH BEERY IS NOT AS CRUEL AS USUAL Noah Beery has been a hard boiled villiain so much lately that we feel rather disappointed when he becomes really white. Lowe, Rockliffe Fellowes and Beery, who are engaged in a highly colored melodramatic movie, “Edst of Suez.” Present at the Ohio all week. Beery is cast as a representative of the English government stationed in China He knows what the Chinese sun will do to the heart of a white man. So Noah becomes a semi-villain to prevent his nephew from marrying a girl (Pola Negri) who has as much Chinese blood in her as white. As such, this girl is not received in polite society. “East of Suez” has been given an oriental background. Mighty .well done from a scenic standpoint. And well acted also. It is over-dramatic at times, but why object to that when it holds your interest. The poison scene has been handled in a grand manner. Negri has a sympathetic role, the sort of thing she needs, because a vampire doesn’t make one radiate that friendly feeling. Negri dresses the part in good style. Some of her gowns are wonders and she knows how to wear ’em. The photography is excellent and the direction has been most wise. All in all, it ii interesting oriental melodrama, much better than the average in tills line of entertainment. Happy ending? Os course. Bill includes organ solo by Lester Huff, orchestral music by Charlie Davis and his orchestra and a mighty interesting nlws reel. At the Ohio all week. •1- -I- -IDOUBLE BILL ON JTEW AT THE ISIS The Isis for the first half of the week is offering Kenneth McDonald in “After a Million,” and an educational comedy, “Dirty Hands.” One
