Busy Week-End in Big Ten —Muncie H. S. Five at Shortridge Gymnasium * \ 2

ONE GAME TONIGHT AND FO UR BA TTLES SA TURD A Y

Purdue and Indiana Active, the'Crimson Netters Stacking ilp Against Powerful Ohio State Squad, Western Conference basket teams have a busy week-end scheduled with "every club in action. It is the opening of the season for eight schools. Only one game has been played, the lowa-Minnesota affair last Monday, which was won by the Hawkeyes. One game'is on the card'tonight with a Hoosier representative, Purdue University, invading the camp of lowa.

The heavy fcard is on Saturday when four games will be played. The feature tilt is between Indiana “U” and Ohio State, two outfits rated among the strongest in the Big Ten. It is doubtful if Coach Dean s aggregation could have picked a tougher rival with which to start the season. The game ajipears about a toss-up with the Buckeyes given the edge because of playing on the home floor. \ Illinois probably will take the Maroons into camp at Chicago, Wisconsin seems to have the edge on Minnesota at the Gopher gym, and Northwestern should be fairly easy for the strong Michigan five. LEWIS REPORTED BADLY INJURED ‘Strangler’ May Have to Rest for Year, Bu United Press KANSAS CITY, Mo., Jan. 9.—Ed (Strangler) Lewis, heavyweight wrestler, who lost his championship title to Wayne Munn here Thursday night, will not be able to wrestle again for at least a year, if then, attendants at St. Luke’s Hospital, where Lewis was taßen following the bout, said today. An X-ray examination revealed that the bone hinge between the pelvis and the spine had been wrenched, attendants said, which probably will keep Lewis in the hospital for several weeks.

Lewis took terrific punishment from the new champion. After dumping Lewis in the first fall, Munn knocked out the Strangler for twenty minutes when iq the second fall he picked Lewis up and hurled him to the mat. The referee awarded this fall to Lewis on a foul. Weakened by the terrific punishment, Lewis offered no opposition in the final fall and the college-athlete won the third and title In fifty seconds. Lewis was taken to a hospital following the match. The crowd wa? all for Munn. Lewis was booed and hissed as he was carried out following the final fall. Thousands of spectators stormed the ring to acclaim the big Nebraskan, who had so decisively bested the Strangler. Lewis’ seconds protested the decision -of the referee giving 'Munn the championship, declaring Munn fouled Lewis in the second fall and that the bout should be awarded their charge. However, Referee Walter Bates held that since Lewis came back for the third time he was thereby signifying his willingness to go on.

Little Johnny Dundee, Who Left Italy in Steerage, Returns Wealthy Mari —Received by Mussolini. Bu Times Special ROME, Jan. 9.—Johnny Dundee, who left Italy unnoticed in the arms of his mother thirty years ago, made a triumphant progress through the capital of his native land Thursday, being acclaimed by crowds in the streets and, as a climax of the occasion, was received by Premier Mussolini.

The premier, although he was still occupied with the waning phases of the latest political crisis, devoted an entire hour to his visit with the battered little prize fighter, who went to America in the steerage and came back in the style of kings. It was Dundee’s greatest day and he met the diplomatic requirements, of the occasion with brilliant skill qnd enthusiasm. “You know,” Mussolini informed Dundee as' the head of the Government grasped the hand that has broken a hundred noses, "I'm a fighter too.” Johnny’s wife, and his manager, Jimmy Johnston, once a fighter himself, looked on proudly, but Dundee was the lion of the occasion and he needed no prompting from either of them to carry along the verbal bflgpunching. Dundee told the premier of the humble departure of his parents to the land of promise and fulfillment, of their struggles in New York’s “Little Italy” and of his rise from a job In the flshmarket to the featherweight championship of the world and wealth beyond his parents’ dreams. GREB NAMESUN REFEREE FOR GO IN DEM RING Harry Also Appoints One of Judges After He Charges. ‘Conspiracy.’ Bu United Press DETROIT, Jan. 9.—After hobbling most of Thursday in a seat of uncertainty, the ten-round decision bout involving the crown of Harry Greb, world’s middleweight champion, with Bob Sage, local lawyerboxerf only awaited the sounding of the gong here tonight. Greb spent the greater part of Thursday in personal conferences with State Boxing Commissioner Plies and promoters, while two gyms packed with fans awaited his advertised work-out. The champion angrily announced he had neither prepared for a championship bout nor desired to risk his crown for the small purse here, when discrepancies in the two contracts developed. Greb’s contract contained an ink insert designating Sage’s weight to be “over 160 pounds,” the middleweight limit. Sage’s contract had no such provision. Knowing that cancellation of the bout, with a SIO,OOO advance sale, would be a death blow to local boxing, the commissioner finally stretched’ a point and permitted Greb to name the referee, A1 Foss, Pittsburgh and one of two judges, Bernard Albacher, also of Pittsburgh. The boxing commissioner will name the other judge. Greb will enter at catch weight.

BLUE AND . WHITE FANS EXCITED OVER STRUGGLE

Coach Burton's Undefeated Team Faces Powerful Magic City Crew in Local Prep Basket Feature. Local high school net fans won’t have to look around the State and wish they were somewhere else tonight. Probably one of the best games on the usual heavy Friday night prep schedule will be played at the Shortridge gym. Muncie is the visiting club and it is rated among the strong outfits in Indiana.

Muncie has lost only two games this season. One of these losses, to Summitville, can not be counted heavily against the Bearcats as not a regular played. The only real setback was received from Frankfbrt. The contest tonight appears to be the hardest test Coach Burton’s Shortridge lads have had. The small Shortridge gym will not nearly accommodate the fans who wish to see the battle. While Shortridge is performing here Manual will be playing at Bloomington. Here is a fine chance for an upset. Manual has been coming along in good shape and may surprise the southern Indiana club. Tech and Broad Ripple are idle tonight in preparation for the city series scrap on Saturday night at the local “Y.” Cathedral is at Decatur to play the Catholic high of that place. Over the State there ip the usual array of feature struggles. Marion, a team which has not been receiving the notice it deserves, clashes with Anderson at'Anderson. Marion may give the Staggmen more of a” battle than many believe. Vincennes is at Bedford in an encounter sure to be hard-fought. Logansport goes to Kokomo in another feature.
