Minnesota was defeated last Monday night. The Hawk eyes have been stumbling blocks for Purdue In basketball. Last year they won two games, which put Lambert’s squad out of the running for the title. fij Robbins Back Winston Robbins, flashy floor guard, will be ready for the whistle at lowa and this fact has encouraged the followers of the Purdue team. He is a player whose place is hard to fill. He seems to have completely recovered from his illness. The problem of who to play at forward continues to be a puzzler on the Boilermaker squad. In three non-Conferenoe games Lambert has used practically every one of his forward candidates. Wright, Jolly, Taube, Neuman and Harmeson are the five leading men bidding for the offensive positions. Cramer at Center The center Job has been practically clinched by Cramer, an elongated youth from Angola. He Is a good jumper. Wellman, reliable bock guard,.has started his year of captaincy most auspiciously, and seems destined to add to the court laurels he already has gathered In Big Ten circles. MICKEY BEATS MIKE, BUT IT DOESN’T MEAN MUCH Welter Champ Gains Honors In Slow No-Decision Bout— Both Offer Excuses When Fans Howl, By HENRY L. FARRELL United Pres* Staff Correspondent NEW YORK, Jan. B.—Careful Mike McTigue, light heavyweight champion of the world, was saved again Wednesday night because he was working in territory where a decision could not be given against him. * Some time ago McTigue was given a beating in Newark by Young Stribling, a southerner of his own weight and size, and Wednesday night he was outpointed in the same ring by little Mickey Walker, welterweight champion.
Walker, because he stayed on the aggressive and tried to poke his bigger opponent out of a shell of defense, won practically every round of a twelve-round no-decision contest that drew nine thousand spectators. Walker weighed 149% pounds and McTigue was under his division’s weight at 160 pounds. Welter Strong In Third The welterweight champion forced the fight from the first round, and in the third round it seemed he had McTigue going, but the light heavyweight champion got out of the hole. McTigfle landed blit one hard punch, and that was a right-hand to the head that knocked Walker across the ring In the first round. The little fellow was not slowed up, however, and he returned to force the fighting. For four rounds it was a fair fight, with Walker digging and tearing away at the body and McTigue keeping himself carefully covered. But from the fifth round It was a slow, listless contest that had the spectators “showering r&zzberries” on the fighters. Each Has AUbl Both fighters made excuses after the contest. McTigue said he had hurt both his hands and Walker said he had entered the ring with a heavy cold. McTigue did act as if he had hurt his hand, but the fans figured the i7:jury must have happened out of the ring as he didn’t hit Walker with enough force to do himself damage. Walker had been favored generally to outpoint McTigue in a no-decision fight, because McTigue cares very little about the results of fights where there are no hands lifted at the finish. Some thought Walker would win by a knockout, but that was not logical. What would Walker have done with the light heavyweight championship If he had won it? PRESTOS VS.
