Health Measures Dr. TANARUS, B. vwQmgQ LETTER FROM SADLY ATHERTON TO RUTH BURKE My Dear Mrs. Burke: I hope you will pardon my writing to you .nd that you will take this letter in the same spirit in which it is written. I assure you that I would never understand what I am going to say better than most women I know. I am really at my writs’ end and I can only turn to you to help me. Do you think that Leslie is ever going to forgive Mr. Prescott? If she is not going to do so, she had better tell him so immediately and get the break over as soon as possible. He is at present no good to this business, himself, nor anything nor anybody. Yes, I quite agree with you, I know he is only getting what is coming to 'him, but that does not straighten out things here at the plant. He keeps every one on the jump down here wflh his orders one minute which he countermands the next. He doesn’t seem able to think consecutively and he seems to have lost all that great constructive ability which I have admired in him so much in the past. Honestly,. Mrs. Burke, I do not think that Mr. Prescott realized that his absence at the time of Leslie's sister’s death could make any particular difference to her. He is one of those men that Is always flattering himself that he never makes a mistake about women, and he understands them not at all. You and I know that when a man disagreeable to go\ through—and that, was what Alice’s death meant to him—John Alden Prescott—he simply gets through with it with as little fuss as possible. He doesn’t want any one outside to help, and more than all else he does not want any outside sympathy. His whole desire is to get it over and off his mind as soon as possible. He doesn't even want to talk about it for fear he will remember it a little longer lhan is necessary. Besides, you know, Mrs. Burke, that Mr. Prescott did not like Aliceand I think he thought if he were home he might say something that would hurt Leslie more than if he stayed away. Do not misunderstand me. I am writing no brief for John Alden Prescott. I am almost sure had I been Leslie I would have broken with him then and there. I would not have done, however, what Leslie is doing. I would not have gone away to eat my heart out In solitude and sorrow. I have the greatest sympathy for Leslie, and I acknowledge her rightness in most matters. She is looking at the thing only from a woman's viewpoint now, however, and in this case, though, I think she is wrong. (Copyright, 1926, NEA Service, Inc.) NEXT: This letter continued. ■. Martha Lee Say* Charm Unlocks Doors for Ugly Duckling
The ugly duckling need not hide herself until she is turned into a swan, before she ventures out into the publio eye. She can calj upon the good fairies of personality, friendliness and charm, and not worry about the lack of symmetry of her features.
She may alse use the beauty doctor and the modißte to some advantage. But these are secondary, to give her self-confidence;, for neither beauty doctor nor modiste, nor both combined, can give the charm of personality. Some of the most happily married women and the most beloved lack physical beauty. They are living proof that inner charm'can replace good looks. Especially in this day of woman’s "freedom,” when she may prove her ability in so many ways, does a woman have an opportunity to shine, regardless of whether her eyes are like the stars and her hair is like the sun. f To be sure, it may take more effort for her to get men to fal\ at her feet, than for the ravishing beauty, but it’s a fairly safe guess they stay there longer. The Ugly Duekling Dear Mis# Dee: I am 17 years old and a senior in high school. I have two older sisters who are very beautiful, but X am homely? I have very few dates, and they have. a lot. There is one boy that seems to like me. He wants to take me to parties, but I dofi't like to go because I always feel so out of it with all the pretty, well dressed firls. I don’t care about clothes, because get so tired of seeing my sisters talking M%nd thinking clothes, clothes, clothes But ou think If I tried to "primp up” I t be more popular? I don't wan* a lot of men hanging around, but I hate to think I will be an old maid. Do you think any one would marry me? X am good at sports, and VdfkMmr* Dear girl, the ugly duckling always envies the swan, and the swan, ,in turn, envies something else. There are far worse things in this world than to lack physical beauty. Personality, character, that indefinable something called charm, dd not depend upon looks. Os course someone will marry you. “Primping up” will help because it will make you less self-con-scious. You can dress well without making clothes your only thought. Go to the parties with the boy. You will find that the most beautiful girls are not always the most popular, and that the homely ones are not always the wallflowers. And that's the way it is all through life. Lawyers Address Dear Miss X>e: Will you please give me the address of Clarence Darrow. a criminal lawyer? XYZ. Mr. Darrow's address is given in the 1924 "Who’s Who" as 140 N. Dearborn St., Chicago.
