MOTHER LIVES TO HEAR FOLKS CALL HER SON ‘JUDGE’ Latest True Story Entitled 'From Bank Messenger to Bench,” By GEORGE BRITT NEA Service Writer NEW YORK, Jan. 2.—We shall now review that latest true story which seems to spring from the imagination of Horatio Alger Jr. It •night be given title of “Loyal John, jf From Bank Messenger to Judge.’’ The hero is John L. Walsh, who has just been appointed by Governor Smith to the Supreme Court of New York. “I want you to be a lawyer, John,’’ his mother told him when he was a small schoolboy. She kept on telling him. But there wasn’t money in the Walsh home to send the promising lad along a smooth road to learning. He had to go to work when he was 14. That was thirty years ago. He took the first job that came along, as a messenger for the City National Bank, but he didn’t stop school. Held to his task by his mother’s ambition, John studied at nights. He got his bachelor of arts degree at New York University and went on to night law #Chool. He finished when he was 25 and was admitted to the bar. He had been working for the city gas and electricity department. First, he had an “overalls’' job, away up in the Bronx. By the time he had finished school he had worked up to be a water inspector. He quit that job and became a law clerk. Eleven years after his to the bar he was appointed a judge of the city court, and now, eight years later, he steps up the gi-ade to the Supreme Court. His mother is dead now, but she lived until after his appointment to the city court, and heard her little boy addressed as “Judge.” Aside from work and ambition, Justice Walsh says the recipe for success is loyalty: "Be on the level with the .man who helps you. Loyalty covers gratitude, manliness and justice. Without it, one can never rise in personality and very rarely in outward position.” PREMIUMS DISALLOWED Vincennes School Trustees Cliarged With Irregular Disbursements. Trustees of the school city of Vincennes are shown to have paid premiums on bonds out of the special school fund, contrary to law, in a State board of accounts report today. The report shows' $417.5Q spent in this manner. Paul P. Doddridge, treasurer, paid out $250 for his official bond and $55.84 for a special bond when a school bond ’issue of $67,000 was floated. Two other trustees, Ira D. Schaffer and Mary G. Townsley, both had bond premiums paid from the fund of •‘55.83 each.

TALENT “Jump in and Scramble Through,” Pastor Advises. A great deal of talent is lost in the world for the want of a little courage. Every day sends tc their graves a number of obscure men who have only remained in obscurity, because their timidity hao prevented them from making a first effort; and who, if they could have been induced to begin, would in all probability have gone great lengths in the career of fame. The fact Is that, to do anything in this world worth doing, we must not stand back shrinking and thinking of the cold and danger, but jump in and ■scramble through as well as we can. —The Rev. Sydney Smith in Philadelphia Inquirer.
