MM BILLS ARE LAID ASIDE FOR LABOR BOARD ACI Leaders Determined to Wage Finished Fight Over Enactment. By WILLIAM J. M’EVOY United Frets Staff Correspondent WASHINGTON, Dec. 27.—With House leaders and supporters of the Howell-Barkley bill, abolishing' the railroad labor board, determined to wage a finish fight over enactment of the measure, a mass of legislation of national scope and sectional Interest is destined to certain death. Unless either side retires from its position, more than 100 bills, many of which are "pet” measures of various Congressmen, will die with the fall of Speaker Gillette's gavel at noon March 4. Bill Heads last The railroad bill, under its peculiar parliamentary status, can only come before the House on the first and third Mondays of each month, the same days designated for consideration of calendar bills. Its present position is at the head of this calendar and the announcement of opponents of the bill to employ every existing parliamentary maneuver to defeat its passage, indicates that remaining bills on the calendar will not be reached this session. Only five calendar days remain between now and March 4. In the pile of bills which cannot be considered by the House until the Howell-Barkley bill is disposed of are the following: Prevent Oil Pollution To prevent the oil pollution of navigable rivers. To punish the unlawful transmis sion in inters umo commerce or through the ma ™ of gambling machines. fraudulent devices, pistols and revolvers. To regulate transportation of labor in interstate commerce. To authorize appropriations for the construction of hangars and maintenance of llying fields for the use of the air mail service of the Postoffice Department. To authorize the Postmaster General to continue the existing govern-ment-owned and operated air mail service. To encourage commercial aviation and to authorize the Postmaster General to contract for air rtiail service. To promote peace and to equalize the burdens and to minify the profits of w ar.
Seed Appropriation To authorize an appropriation for j the Secretary of Agriculture to purchase and distribute valuable seeds. 1 To purchase the Oldroyl collection ] of Lincoln relics, the prettiest in number and most important in value of any single collection in existence. To authorize the erection of a monument here to symbolize the game of baseball. To establish an Alaska game commission to protect game animals, land fur-bearing animals and birds in Alaska. To enlarge the Stanislaus National! Korest, California, the Umatilla, AVallowa and Whitman National Forests, Oregon, the Nevada National Korest. To provide for the establishment of a probation system In United States courts. To investigate the feasibility of establishing a national military park in Kansas City. Mo., commemorative of the Battle of Westport, Oct. 23. ISB4. A number of bills granting the consent of Congress to various cities and towns throughout the country to construct and operate bridges and j dams also are awaiting their turn j on the calendar. ROAD WORKERS ■ UNEARTH GOLD Blasting Reveals Very Rich Quartz Vein, By times Special VICTORIA, Britisb Columbia, Dec. 27. —Road gangs, constructing a two-mile cut-off on the road from HteYY'art, British Columbia and Hyder, up to the Premier mine. ha\'e struck anew bonanza, according to Charles Herron, Seattle newspaper publisher, who arrived here from the north. The netv find is about two miles out of Stewart. Some rock cutting had to be done to get the new piece of roadway through and the blasting exposed some of the richest quartz ever seen in the north, he explained. Samples of the gold were sent out to be assayed. The assays showed SSOO a ton. Officials of the Premier mines are haY-ing samples taken every eighty feet along the road and the samples assayed, he said. In the meantime there has been a rush from SteYvart and Hyder and the sides of the road are now all staked out as claims. Strict in Sweden It’s not so hard here, after considering motoring in Sweden, for instance. There motorists are inspected four times a year without warning. Steering gear, brakes, lights, equipment, operation and general condition of the cars are gone over. London Traffic Total passengers carried in 1923 in London by all means of transport reached the number of 2,600,000,000. This is exclusive of suburbanites who took trains in to the city.
