WV. Y. Ring Commission Discusses Gibbons’ Light Heavyweight Challenge

GENE TUNNEY MAY BE REQUESTED TO MEET VET BOXER Not Much 'Danger' of McTigue Accepting—Flowers Becomes Popular, Bv PAUL, W. WHITE United Pres* (Hal} Correspondent NEW YORK. Dec. 23.—The status of Tommy Gibbons. St. Paul light heavyweight, in his quest for the title held by Mike MeTigue and disputed by Gibbons and Gene Tunnev, was to come before the New York State boxing commission today. Gibbons filed a challenge with the board for bouts with either MeTigue or Tunney. McTigue’s Case The commission already has taken •otlce of a challenge filed by Tunney kd if MeTigue er ask for license In this State, it would be granted only with the provision he fight Tunney. MeTigue is probably the most unpopular of any of the division champions. The title he annexed in 1922 by defeating Battling Siki in Dublin never has been defended against the best American light heavyweights. It was probable Tunney would be directed today to accept Gibbons' challenge. Tex Rickard has been quoted as saying he would like to put the go on in Madison Square Garden some time during February. Prefers Outdoors Scrap Whether Tunney ■will accept such a decision Is doubtful. Known as the "American light heavyweight champion.” Tunney wants to substitute “world's.” and Is spoiling for a fight with MeTigue first. Then, too, a Gibbons-Tunney fracas undoubtedly would draw a large gate, and Gene's manager hopes that If the match is scheduled It will take place outdoors. Meantime fans who have been craving action among the light heavyweights are calling for a bout between Tiger Flowers, the Atlanta slugger, and either Gibbons or Tunney. VETERAN JENNINGS PICKS ALL-TIME MYTHICAL NINE Selects Keeler Over Ruth and Frisch Over Jimmy Collins —Mathewson Pitch and Bresnahan Catch, By KBA Service NEW YORK, Dec. 23. —Since picking all-America football teams is all the rage, just to be different, Hughie Jennings of the New York Giants was asked to pick an all-time all-Amer-ica baseball team.

Hughie, who has been connected with major league baseball for be*ter than thirty years, is certainly qualified to make tho selection. Always game, willing to take a chance, knowing hts choices will meet with disfavor In many quarters, Jennings spoke thusly: "The greatest infield I ever have seen in action would be made up of Sister at first. Lajole at second, Wagner at short and Frisch at third. “My selection of Frisch over Jimmy Collins, no doubt, will occasion some surprise. Despite the fact that Frisch Is now playing second, I regard third as his natural position, and consider him a more valuable all-round player than Jimmy Collins. “The outfield would be mode up of Cobb, Speaker and Keeler. I have selected Keeler in preference to Ruth because I regard him as a greater team player. "My battery would be Mathewson and Bresnahan. Thera never was a better one. Incidentally, I would be content to manage that team In any league.”
