SPECIAL FAVORS FOR WEALTHY IN PRISON CHARGED Deposed Atlanta Officials Deny Accepting Bribes — Probe Continues. B/ I'nitffl Prattt ATLANTA. Ga.. Dec. ID.—Protfsting they are victims of a “political frame-up,” A. E. Sartain, deposed warden of Atlanta penitentiary - , and L. J. Fletcher. deputy warden, todayfaced preliminary hearing before United States Commissioner Abbott on charges of accepting bribes from Federal convicts. Sartaln and Fletcher were arrested following a secret investigation of conditions at the penitentiary by 'Department of Justice agents. They are accused of receiving hribes totally of SIO,OOO each from wealthy bootlegger prisoners in return for “soft and easy jobs" about the prison ajid other special privileges. Demand Trial “It is nothing but a frame-up designed to settle old political scores,” they declared through their attorneys. “We will demand immediate trial or dismissal of the charges.” Although Federal officials have kept secret details of their investigation. a number of tales concerning alleged "special privileges” accorded prisoners have leaked from behind the walls of the prison. Among these is a story of a “special privilege table,” alleged to have been kept for favorite prisoners. Wealthy and favored convicts were fed in a private dining-room at their own table and on menus not accorded regular prisoners, it was charged. Special Quarters The "favorites" also enjoyed special sleeping quarters, it was charged, and as “honor convicts” roamed' outside the prison walls unattended by guards, and “soft and easy" jobs about the prison were reserved for them. Convicts who enjoyed the special privileges, it is'said, Included Mannie Kessler and Maurice Sweetwood. wealthy New York bootleggers; George Remus, Ohio “bootleg king;” Herman Steinhilber and John Ileyns of Evansville, Ind.. and Charles Grayson, Kokomo, Ind.. bootleggers.
