Villain of 1845 Hissed by Those Who Patronize Theater in 1924
By WALTER D. HICKMAN SHE villain of 1 545 was hissed on the evening of Dec. 19. 1924. just like he was hissed in 1845. Am speaking of the way the chie* v:l!ahi in “Fashion." known as “the sensational play of 1*45." was hissed last night when the play was revived in I*4.' style by the Little Theatre Society at the Masonic Temple. Os course, the only interest that the revival has is the fact that it hrings us face to face with what our grandfathers and grandmothers laughed at when they went to the theater. They hissed the villain in 1845 and vve did the same thing last night. Tt was just like going back to 1545. That was the feeling that I had when 1 studied the firpt two acts of this aged comedy. I left tiefore the last act started. But I sawtwo acts. I had more serious thoughts than funny ones when I studied this play. It seems to me that we have taken great steps forward In American

play writing since Anna Cora Mowntt wrote ''Fashion" and I am sure that we have improved a whole lot in dress and manners if this comedy reflected lid ions society In that day. “Fashion." as much as 1 saw of It. is a novelty and was presented by the Little Theatre in the right spirit, the spirit of 1*45. George Somnes directed "Fashion.’’ He kept the play in the right age. The scenery and costumes looked like they might have'been used in 1545. Good fun. A pleasant novelty. The programs were duplicates in style of 1*45. ail on one long piece of paper.
