The hum of industry stopped in scores of factories and shops as Samuel Gompers, for forty years president of the American Federation of Labor, was laid to rest In Sleepy Hollow cemetery, Tarry town. Call for the silent tribute was sent out by Hugo Frayne, general organizer of the federation, after labor organizations In Denver. Baltimore and other cities had decided on it as a voluntary tribute. Funeral Services Acclaiming Gompers as n Herman, a pioneer in the ranks festf labor and a patriot of Rabb’i Stephen Wise today conducted funeral services for the dead labor leader in the crowded auditorium of the New York Elks Club.. James Duncan. Gompers’ first lieutenant for years, spoke labor’s farewell to Its chief. Duncan briefly reviewed Gompers’ life work and read a last messags, which tht* “chief” gave him three days before he died, evidently with a premonition of death upon him.” “When I am gone I don't want the work I have started to stop We have only begun,” Gompers’ last message read. “I want you of the American Federation of Labor to carry on.” Impressive services by- the Elks followed. Shortly after 11:30 a. m the eas ket was taken from the Elks Club and the funeral procession proceeded to Tarry town. Services at the cemetery were conducted by St. Cecile Masonic Lodge of New York.
