Skinner and Whiteside Offer Fine Entertainment to City

By WALTER I). HICKMAN “ j E have ail dreamed of the days W when we would become the - T T rulers. It takes a wise man to he a xuler and get away with the job in hon-

fst fashion. That, in a nutshell, is the story of "Sani ho Panza," which Otis Skinner revealed at English's last night. Sancho was the companion of Don Quixotte. who went around trying to bring romance and chivalry back to life. Sancho. even when he became a ruler, had as his companion bis beloved donkey, Dapple. This play

Is a satire upon about everything under the sun. It pokes fun at the governing class and ‘■kids" those who seek justice from the rulers. It "kids" those who desire high places when they do not even know how to be good subjects. And Sancho. during the experiment of government, makes many a wise remark. He asks that the churches unlock the doors so that God can come out Into the city, because "the city needs God " Sancho as ruler leaves his palace and sleeps in the street with his donkey. Sancho Invites the people into the palace, but this ruling business kept Sancho from his dreams, and so he with his donkey return to the dusty road. This satire has been gifted with the golden services of Otis Skinner and played before a beautiful background of color, action and music.

Here you find the Skinner of the other days—tho s:ime voice, actions and all. Hero you find perfect acting. Skinner reads poetry and music into his lines until the entire show becomes a beautiful poem composed of wise remarks. Here is a gay and pretty adventure that awaits you when you see Mr. Skinner in this smart satire It is adult mental entertainment. I approached it with ease and it was not long before I was lost in the beauty of the story. It is really a dream story of man’s desire. It is delightful entertainment In the hands of Skinner and his many assistants. Must speak of the work Robert Rosalre .as Dapple. the donkey. Rosaire makes a perfect mule. Dapple is a wise old clown even if he is just a donkey. The work of Vincent Stemroyd as the Chamberlain. Herbert Dehnore as Gregory and Montague Rutherford as the Duke stand out from the excellent cast. I most sincerely recommend "Sancho Panza" as one of those delightful mental experiences of which we have so few on the stage. You will miss something delightfully smart and wise if you fail to see Mr. Skinner and his associates. At English’s today and Saturday. -I- -I- •!• WHITESIDE BRINGS | NEW PLAY TO Ml RAT Walker Whiteside, with “Sakura,” ' has again given the public something j worth while and needed. “Sakura.” I with its Oriental theme and setting, ; strikes a note that has been miss- | ing for a long while, and which will

be the more appreciated on that account.

The artistry of Mr. Whiteside in his interpretation of the role of Prince Hagane will give you an altogether different and perhaps more p 1 e asing i m pression of what is so commonly referred to as the “Yellow Peril,” besides an altogether different view of the e m o tions and mental processes of the Oriental. The story, a tale of the love of the power ful

Prince Hagane and the beautiful Onda Sada, is an intense and lifelike thing that is entertainment of the highest order. You are swept into the heart of ageold Japanese customs, you are made to feel the deep significance those century-old practices and to sympathize with them. No mysterious anil deadly pall seems to hover over the action as told in this story as Is the habit of some who like to conjure up something to talk about without knowing just what it is. Thoroughly modern settings of the newer stagecraft done in an impressionistic way, in th opinion of the writer, greatly add to and enchance the beauty of the production. Everything is done in a complete harmonious tone that matches the beauty of the story and action

perfectly. Nothing is overdone with the uso of colors as could so easily be done in such a setting. Miss Sydney Shields, as “Onda Sada" the little Japanese girl who has spent four years ~in America, will make your heart go out to her from her very first appearance. She has a charm about her that can hardly be expressed in words. To receive the full benefit of her exquisite performance you must see the show. The rest of the cast competent. The more we study “Sakura,” the more convinced are we that Mr. Whiteside has a sure fire success which has general appeal. It strikes anew note in the dramatic stories for the stage today. It has that human element that aids in lifting “Sakura” from the ranks of being a diplomatic affair. It’s greatest value rests In the fact that this new play gives Whiteside a chance to rise to great dramatic heights In every act. In other words It is Just the play for this star. When we go to see Mr. Whiteside, it seems that we “buy” the services of the star. It takes both a play and a star to make a success and we think "Sakura” hies both the needed elements for a success. This play Is not yet two weeks old, as it was presented for tho first time on any tage in Columbus, 0., last Thursdny. Mr. Whiteside Is now en route to Chicago. At the Murat today and Saturday. seems to he reunion time at- this theater. O’Brien’s Sextette composed of six young men and an older njan at the piano furnish the jazz music of the day. The program is tuneful and the numbers have been well selected. • Renee Noel and Walter C. Percival are again on view with their little sketch, “Egg In a Bag,” which tells of the troubles of an actor who Is broke. This act gets along nicely because it is one of those human tittle things that gets into the heart. Flagler brothers and Ruth have a musical act of merit. These three people sing and “lay the popular music of the day. They are an easy hit. Holden and Harron have hopeless material. Hill and Quinnell open the bill with a cycle act mixed with comedy and dancing The movie is “The Bandolero,” a hull fight story. At Palace today and Saturday.
