BAN SEEKS SCALPS OF THREE LEADERS $ Johrtson Gunning for Landis, McGraw and Stoneham — Not Much Kick in Coast League Evidence, By HENRY L. FARRELL In itcd Press Staff Correspondent NEW YORK. Dec. B.—When Ban Johnson shows his alleged proof of gambling on the Pacific Coast to Commissioner Landis who will preside over the joint meetings of the major leagues Thursday, the fireworks will start.
The American League head, who attempted to have the last world series called off because of the O’Connell-Dolan affair. Is still gunning for Judge Landis, while he hopes stray shots may clip John J. McGraw and Charles Stoneham, owners of the Giants. Experts who have studied the situation claim Eandis has the stronger backing. Most of F.an's former followers have transferred their allegiance. Clark Griffith was lost to the Johnson forces when Ban peppered away at the first world series the Washington leader ever enjoyed. After lauding Landis as they have, the owners of the minor leagues expect in return to have the judge demand of Johnson the proof of his charges. It Is rumored the Pacific Coast gambling evidence to be produced is but a bunch of newspaper clippings. •PAGE BACK HOME WITH GOOD DATES Minnesota Probable Grid Foe —Chicago on Net Card, Athletic Director Page of Butler has returned home from the Big Ten meeting in Chicago with one football game arranged with Illinois at Vrbana Oct. 1" and another tentative grid date with Minnesota there Nov. 7. PISH COLLEGE ! PLANS EXPANSION TO AID VAUGHAN Scholler Slated as Athletic i Director —Strong Assistant Coach Is Desired. According to reports from reliable ; sources. Wabash College authorities plan to expand the athletic department of the Craw fordsville Inatij tutlon. The idea is to have more coaches available and an athletic director. The institution has been operating without an official athletic director, although Pete Vaughan, football j and basketball coach, has acted in ; that capacity to some extent. Vaughan is kept too busy with football and basketball to give much I time to a director's duties. Therefore. if the financial problem can be solved. I-larry Scholler, of f’rawfordsville. is to be made Wabash athletic director if he cares for the berth. He also would coach baseball, duties which he resigned last spring. The new plan calls for Vaughan to le given a strong assistant in football. Naming the assistant would | be left to Vaughan. Nash Higgins, varsity track coach ! j and freshman grid instructor, is j slated to remain, it is said. Wabash alumni athletic officials ■ and authorities at the college have ; j agreed on the changes and th plan I will be presented to the board of trustees for sanction within a few days. Pennant Plays in Basketball
**• By COACH H. B. ORTNER. Cornell, Eastern Champions. SHIS out-of-bound play is always made under your own basket. Number five takes the Stall out. Players one, two, three and four line up across the court a*t about the end of the foul lane circle. Two fast and clever men, preferably the forwards, if they are accurate shots, are used to cut into the basket, while one and three, preferably the guards, cut out to the side. Just at the time the two forwards are behind number two and four’s opponents they cut behind them and receive the pass from number five. A bounce pass often works very well, as it enables the playeVs cutting In to put on speed or slow up if necessary. Number five swings out to the side on which lie passes, for turn pass in case the play is not properly timed. The timing is the important part of this play, but with enough practice and the players working together it can be successfully executed a large percentage of the time. In case the play is not able to go through as planned, the ball should lie passed to numbers one or three, who have cut to the side of the court. This prevents the

INTEREST IS KEEN IN GOTHAM SCRAP Gibbons-Norfolk Battle Tuesday Attracts Fistic Fans— Chief Bout of Christmas Fund Entertainment, By I nited Press NEW YORK, Dec. 8. —Two leading boxers who are tagged ns undesirables in most managerial note books, meet Tuesday night in the tirst important bout of the indoor season and in the most interesting match of the year. Tom Gibbons, universally recognized as the best light heavyweight in the world, will meet Kid Norfolk, the negro champion, iu Madison Square Garden in a contest, promoted to raise a Christmas fund for the poor kids of the New York tenements.
Tex Rickard nearly fell off his . chair In the Garden tower when In* j succeeded in making the match fori the committee in chprgo of the ; charity. For two years he had been \ trying to get a first-class opponent j for Gibbons and for the same length of time he had been trying to get | someone to fight Norfolk. Rival j i managers cotUd not he interested, j Gibbons and Norfolk were too tough, Rickard was told in cold talk. The real low-down on the Gibbons case was not shown until the commission tried to get an opponent for him. Asa result of that attempt it is now a matter of public record that Wills, Renault. Tunney and Kirpo are all windbaggers and that they have no just claim to a I eham-e for the heavyweight championship when they are afraid of a | light heavyweight. Gibb,ms ought to win decisively and tht-n he can have the thankless and fruitless assignment of trying to get a match with even n fair second-rater.
