OVERPRODUCTION ftURTING FARMERS, COOLIDGE ASSERTS President Talks to Livestock Exhibitors —Goes Back to Washington. B CHICAGO*"!**. 5. —Reduce pro duction was the advice President Coolidge gave to farmers in a s. • here Thursday night at the International Livestock Exposition. Most of the ills of agriculture conies from overproduction, Coolidge declared, and not from the failure of the government to devise panaceas.. “It is not from the lack of an> government activity in the"-.’ tlons that the farmer is suffering. Mr. Coolidge declared emphatically. “The troubles of the farmer are on the farm and in the market. They come largely from over-production. We are searching for remedies “The sound remedy is to reduce production and that la a remedy which will automatically apply Itself If there Is no artificial interference." Change Coming Coolidge declared the time will come when this country will be•me an Importer of foodstuffs and s, question will be under-produc-tion rather than over-production. The Federal government is doing everything within its power to help agriculture attain a secure footing. Coolidge said, pointing out that $5,000,000 has been placed nt the disposal of the War Finance Corporation and the Agricultural Department during the past three years. This money was used to help deflated agricultural districts. “Looking to the future, the Government must aid generously in developing a national agricultural policy on broadly constructive lines." he said. "It must encourage orderly and centralized marketing as a substitute for the haphazard and wasteful method of the past. We must help the farmer to reduce his taxes, broaden his foreign market and keep freight rates as low ns possible while keeping the railroads efficient." An Should Help General business and commerce would derive great benefit from a prosperous agricultural community, the President declared in Intimating that all business men ought to Jump In and help the farmer. President and Mrs. Coolidge took keen enjoyment out of the parade of prize winners at the livestock show. They were interested in the ponder ous draft horses, some weighing up to a ton and a half They gazed with admiration at the prize winning cattle, hogs and sheep and expressed amazement at the success of the Hug tm-th ids of the Midi! |3 -stern livesstock raisers. party left for 10:45 p. nt. The Coolidge party went as it came—in regular Pullmans, dispensing with a special car. One-fourth of the farmers of America are not fit for cultivation, farm experts assert.
