DANCE SMOKING TO BE WATCHER Chief Enforces Order as Fire Prevention. Police don’t intend to let dancing get so hot in Indianapolis this winter that fires result. This was the inference drawn today from announcement that Capt. Charles Sumner had changed matrons for public dancing at a hotel. Sumner investigated a report of Policewoman Oozetta Osborn that when the regular dancing places overflowed the dancers went into a coffee shop and she observed both men and women smoking. There’s nothing in the public dance ordinance to prevent womej or men smoking, but Police Chief Herman F. Rikhoff months ago put a ban upon it. Rikhoff has not barred smoking in restaurants. It's not the smoking the chief objects to, it was said. It’s the danger ; of fire and panic in a crowded room. With the dancing season in full | swing, police will watch all halls I closely, the chief said. Officers were : cautioned not to forget that the ban i still is on cheek-to-cHeek dancing.
