Economical Service 5n the last fiscal year the Active Members of m F.U.who use Indiana Bel! service paid n 3B\J $394,133.15, or an average of $2.22 each for products of the American Telephone & Telegraph Company which were purchased for them by the Indiana Bell Company. •a* This sum was eqr,al to four and one-half per cent of the total amount collected from telephone users by the Indiana Bell Company during the year. It was paid by the Indiana Bell to the A. T. & T. Cos. for the following service: L The use and maintenance of all the telephone transmitters, receivers and induction coils on the Indiana Bell System. t. The availability of capital in such sums and at such times as was necessary to development and maintenance of uninterrupted service. 3. The rights of all patents owned or controlled by the A. T. & T. Cos. and the right, to use all standardized new met hods and apparatus developed through experimental work by the A. T. &. T. Cos. 4. The benefits of advice and assistance from the largest and most expert staff of trained men in the engineering, operating and administrative branches of telephony. 6. Protection against anyliability that might arise through the use of patented apparatus, methods or systems. 6. The right to extend this service to connecting lines and the benefit of the experience of all other companies associated with the A. T. & T. Cos. in meeting the difficulties of the business. Did the telephone patron pay too for tkis service? Telephone experts have repeatedly shown that no one telephone company could furnish the same service provided by the A. T. Sc T. Cos. for less. Experts estimate that the Indiana Bell could not, itself, provide this service for its limited number of patrons for $lO apiece , annually. ®But, when the costs are divided among all the telephone users of the Nation, it is obvious that they are less than when borne by the patrons of one company alone. Next we will discuss the basis of telephone rates. INDIANA BELL TELEPHONE CO. A Division of the Working Membership of The Society of American Telephone Users*
THREAT TO ASK REPEAL Os CITY ZOKELAW MADE Plan Commission Split Over Petition for Grocery, A threat to have the city zoning law repealed by city council was made by Bloyd D. Claycoinbe, council representative on the city planning commission, in a session late Tuesday, after a hitter argument on whether to permit business interests at the southwest corner of Thirtieth and Delaware Sts. Clayeomb stoutly opposed a petition of E. II Bingham to establish a grocery at that corner, but his motion to deny the petition deadlocked the board of zoning appeals with four opposing and four favorable votes. The case was continued a week. “Then I might as well go to the council and ask repeal of the ordinance,” Clayeomb said. “If we let the bars down every time there is a petition, we are not serving any good purpose." “Is that a threat o r a promise?" retorted Gustav F iirnidt, forme! eily councilman, and member of th* board. The vote showed Citycombe, John Atherton, Foster C!:pplngr and Frank U. Bingonfelter voting against, and Thomas C. Howe, Thomas Dillon, Coffin and Schmidt, for the petition.
