JAILED IN PARADISE, HE WON’T GO HOME ; John Bothnia, Prisoner of Boer War, Refused to Leave Bermuda Until British Government Pays,
By WESTBROOK PEGLER j HAMILTON, Bermuda, Nov. 21. j John Bothnia has been a prisoner in , ; Paradise for twenty-throe years, or over since his tattered troupe was! I rounds 1 tip by the British army in ! the Boer War. He likes it fine. He could go j home tomorrow if he would, but , John is still an enemy of the British and will not take the oath of; j allegiance to King George. There 1 fore, he stays on and on in Beri rnuda, a prisoner of principle, cap- ' rured in a war that is almost forgot- [ ten. Sent to Prison ! John took the field along with the I other Boer farmers in the Transvaal !in 1899 and fought for two years before he was picked up. Af'er a i time he found himself in a prison ! compound on the Island of Bermuda, i a member of a colony of 4,500 cap j i fives. When the war ended Great ! Britain, victorious, offered the entire j cnloney fiee transportation back to J Africa, provided that they took the ioath of allegiance to the crown. John Bothnia and William Laub-, scher were lenders of the prison j community. They refused to lot bygone.! lie bygones, except for a price. They wanted a pound sterling a day for every day they had spent in tile prison camp, first-class passage \ homo and recompense for their lands and cattle which had been confiscated in the war. Lnuhscher died two months ago in Bermuda, a stubborn, whiskered, hostile old fellow, who insisted to the last that the crown of Great j Britain owed him approximately $40,000. with interest at 6 per con’. 1 as wages for his twenty-three years : of isolation in the beautiful island 1 in the Gulf Stream where there are no taxes nor traffic cops nor prohibition agents. Among those who ti iff--> with the
i laws of American communities, Sing j Sing prison, with its bail games, : movies, musical comedies, extra ' mural liberties and ice cream three times a week, is known as “The Castle on the Hudson” and regarded las a country club. But Sing Sing as : compared to the Island prison which | confines John Bothnia is like a ! crossing-keeper’s shanty compared :to Rockefeller's mansion off the Avenue. Swim or Drink? John may go deep-sea fishing, if I lie likes. He may swim in the sap- | phire lagoons of Bermuda or rub his : vest buttons against the mahogany ! of the bars in the pubs and hotels ]of the island. In a technical sense, he is still under arrest, hut the governor general of the island knows 1 that John Bothnia will not escape. • Perhaps, at times, he wishes that ! John would, for the old boy must be ! carried over year after year on the j books as a prisoner of the Boer War. SHE DIDN'T KNOW HIM ! Driver Is Fined for Trying to Fateh Street Far. Testimony in speed court showed M. J. McClure, 3178 Graceland Ave., | speeded his auto to catch up with an Illinois street car in order that lie I might speak to a girl on board. He j said he knew the girl. She said he did not. “Twenty-five and costs for speed--1 irg,” said Judge Pro Tom. Russell , Harrison. To Relieve a ('old in One Day Tnke Laxative PROMO QT'ININE Tablets.
