‘DEFENSE FUND’ IS REVEALED IN HAWIS TRIAL Stockholders Contribute $36 for Indicted Officials, Hawkins Mortage Company officials sent out a letter purporting to have been written by a “stockholders' protective committee.” defending the officials, after the officials were indicted in Federal Court, it was brought out by the Government today before Judge Ferdinand A. Geiger and a jury. Sixteen officers of the Hawkins and affiliate .dconipanies are being tried on charges of using mails in a scheme to defraud. Dr. Charles M. Burge, port, testified he did not know he was chairman of the “stockholders’ protective committee'* until he was called to N>w York for a meeting. ] Other Government witnesses gave testimony indicating they did not know the Hawkins offi uals meant to use the committee to defend themselves against the Government's attack. ■BANDITS FOREGO GUNS Hold-up men who instead of guns used brute strength to accomplish their ends obtained money in one attempt Sunday night and left a victim before they obtained anything in another case.
