It afforded an index to the extent de- : mand has picked up since election uncertainties were removed. Stocks began the new week briskly, with pronounce,! strength in several leading industrials. Mack ' Trucks scored the greatest gain, reaching anew high for the year at o*2, up 11 points from last week's ' jW. Bullish demonstrations went ahead in special groups in the late morning, carrying the whole market forward. Public utilities were enlivened hp constructive operation? in gas stocks. Peoples Gas attained a new high for 1924 at 110*4 and Columbia Gas at 46*4. Merchandising shares were buoyant under the Pad of May Stoats, which spurted four points to 100®* Cuba Cane Sugar preferred displayed activity at the best levels of the year. IT.—Grain prices opened higher on the Chicago Board of Trade today. Following a sharp advance in the 1 " Ivor poo! market, wheat met good | ,jying at the outset and nrices went ehead '-t to % rents. Lack of moisture in the winter wheat belt, cold weather in parts of Argentine and sharp advances in shipper's offers added to the bullish spirit of the trade. With a guard of honor of The Shortridge R. O. T. C., the body of Miss Selleck lay in state from 11:15 a. m. to 2 p. m. In Catch Mills Hall at Shortridge. Funeral services were held it p. m. in the hall, with Shortridge students Rnd teachers and other friends of Mis-- Selleck attending. Representatives of the Shortridge Alumni Association, headed by Dr. Carleton B. McCulloch, president, were named to attend the services. The Sketching Club attended in a body. At 10 p. m. today the body will leave for Utica. Mich., for burial. It will be accompanied by Miss todleek's sister. Mrs. Clara Colquitt of Detroit. Mich.. While Dawes' physicians declared j the ease to be minor in character, they said the patient might be confin'd to the hospital for two weeks. Dawes was operated on Sunday, after rirrenee of the attack of rup ture which first became evident six years ago. He was struoken while going ih*ough his daily setting-up-i exercises. A local anaesthetic was used Defendant Admits Killing Robert Hadley, 40, colored, halted his’ trial on a murder charge In Criminal Court today by pleading guilty to second degree murder in connection with the fatal stabbing of Georgia Osborn, colored, at a rooming house on Missouri St., last July. He was sentenced to life imprisonment. Fifty men had been summoned f } *r jury duty.
