MIDDLE WEST IS EXCITED OVER SOUTH BEND FRAY Nebraska and Notre Dame in Saturday Classic —Rockne Fears Huskers' Line and Speedy Ends, Bv EDWARD C. DERR United Prrss Staff Correspondent CHICAGO, Nov. J4.—‘“Hold the line and stop tlie # onds.’ ? With this battle cry, Knute Rockne’s great Notre Dame eleven will go into its game at South Bend Saturday against Nebraska’s giant Corn Huskers, determined that the honor of the “Fightin’ Irish’’ shall be restored.

For two years Notre Dame has come through its schedule without a defeat, only to be humbled at its hour of triumph by a team of Huskers that simply wouldn’t be licked. And now the Irish have lured the Huskers to South Bend- They hope to taste revenge. The game, easily the headliner on the Middle West football program this week, will 1-e witnessed by only about 26,000, becausa Cartier field is small. N. D. Is Favorite Betting odds at South Bend noware four to three on the Irish and are expected to rise as the hour of the battle draws nearer. Rockne has pointed his team for Nebraska and doesn’t mind telling the world about it. He hasn’t had to overwork his first string backs to beat the Army, Princeton. Georgia Tech and Wisconsin and they are tearing at the leash to “lick the Huskers.” Nebraska has only a fair team, having been beaten by Illinois and Oklahoma. But they didn't have unbeaten teams when they trampled on Notre Dame in 1922 and 1923. They carried the jink that b- it Notre Dame and they have little more than that jinx to depend on Saturday. They have been weak away from their home field and they may be “easy meat'' for the Irish. Seek Upon Field The Notre Dame mentor has n<> ticed the strength of the Nebraska line and the speed of their ends and it will be the chief job of Notre Dame to hold the line and stop the ends so that Crowley, Miller, Layden and Stuhllreher can get started toward the open field. This *.<•< ■ :n----plished. Notre Dame should win. While the Middle West spotlight is placed on South B?-nd Saturday, Illinois and Chicago—tied for first place in the Big Ten Conference — meet easy opponents, Illinois facing Minnesota at Minneapolis and Chicago taking on the crippled Northwestern eleven. A picturesque game at Columbus is on the schedule, Ohio S:a*e taking on its ancient rival —Michigan. Both teams have been beaten, but Michigan has shown the greater strength. HMPLEM OF Crucial Struggles in Various Sections for the Undefeated Grid Teams, By HENRY L. FARRELL, United Press Staff Correspondent NEW YORK, Nov. 14. —Form received such a pasting last week and the dope was kicked around so freely that most anything can happen on the gridiron Saturday without qualifying as a shock. Notre Dame, Pennsylvania, Alabama and Stanford go into hard t ames as the major sectional leaders. and unless the figures go wrong a,.:iln they should emerge as the leaders. Notre Dame probably will have its hardest game of the season against Net,i ask , The Corn Huskers have . inxod the Catholics for two years, : hut it will take pnore than a jinx to win Saturday's game. Rockne has '! is players in better shape than they , were last year and ought to get • •no ugh from Stuhldreher, Miller, I Crowley and Layden to win. It is quite possible Notre Dame ! in this game may try to make a big score. Pennsylvania has been lucky so far this season Last week's slim victory over Georgetown should do a lot of good, however, by convincing tho players they are not too good. Pennsylvania looks like a ! winner over Penn-State this week with a possibility of a tie score. Alabama has a hard opponent In : Centre. The Kentuckians are not : the class they were last year, but • have pointed for the game and may ; cause trouble.
