WHEELER REPLIES TO ‘PANIC THREAT’ OF SECT. HUGHES Interests Will Not Cut Off Own Noses, Says Pro*4 gressive, By T>OWEI,L, MELLETT Times Staff Correspondent FLINT, Mich., Oct. 30.—Senator Wheeler issued the following statement in reply to the threat of an industrial depression made by Secretary of State Hughes in his Chi cago speech: “Seldom in American history have the people been asked to lend ear to so cowardly an utterance as that of Secretary of State Hughes Tuesday night in Chicago. ‘lt would not take much to destroy our prosperity,’ he said. ‘All you have to do is to shatter confidence. This would happen if the third party should really approach success.’ "Consider that statement in all Its naked weirdness. It wouldn't take much to destroy our prosperity. says Mr. Hughes. What a commentary on the foundation of the alleged prosperity! All you have to do is shatter confidence, he says. “Will Hughes tell of any one who has found this confidence? Has Mr. Hughes found any signs of confidence on the part of the American people in the Administration. No. there has been none. “President Dodging" “With a President and his cabinet ducking and dodging every reasonable question put to them bv the American people, with a Congreso, composed chiefly of Republicans, repudiating its own Administration at every opportunity, the country has struggled along until now, just waiting for the time when it could register its complete lack of confidence. It will do so next Tuesday. Millions of Republicans and millions of Democrats are going to declare their lack of confidence in the privately controlled Republican administration and are going to declare it so emphatically that it will be many years before another set of office holders dare attempt to betray the public confidence as they have done. “Mr. Hughes’ plea amounts to this, ‘Don't lock the stable door now that the horse is stolen. It would destroy confidence. It would lead the people to suspect that the horse is no longer there.’ “What Mr. Hughes, of course, is trying to do is to utter a guarded threat in behalf of the financial and industrial interests. These interests want a free hand to continue their exploitation of the Americna people. He says, in effect, that if they don't get it they are going to take their revenge by destroying our prosperity. “Our industrial slavery would be complete if it were true that from this time forward we cannot shake loose a corrupt and incompetent political Administration without having our prosperity destroyed. But it isn't true. Mr. Hughes knew it wasn't true when he said it and the common sense of the American people will tell them that it isn’t true. The bankers of America will not quit trying to make money when Mr. Coolidge and Mr. Hughes have been retired from office. The steel manufacturers will not quit, nor the clothes manufacturers, the cotton manufacturers, the railroads and all the rest of the industrial concerns. "Will Buckle Down” “They may be unhappy, but their grief w-ill not drive them mad.-They will not start cutting off their noses to spite their faces. On the contrary, a lot of . them will buckle down to business as they have never done before. Without special concessions from the Government to take the place of intelligence and industry, a lot of them may have to take their feet down off the table and begin to study their jobs. “But they won’t shut down their plants. They won’t refuse orders. They won't do anything except operate as fully and energetically as the buying demand will enable them. “It is an old, old threat that Mr. Hughes is making. It is made every four years by the party in power, but no set of bankers and no set of Industrial employes ever have carried out that threat. This country never will see any set of bankers and employers so insanely careless of their own interests as to attempt to carry it out." A British expedition brought back 9.000 specimens of fish from the Nile in Egypt.
