PROGRESSIVES IN MICHIGAN WORRY G. 01 LEADERS Wheeler Draws Large and Enthusiastic Crowds in Industrial Cities. Bv LOWELL MELLETT Times Staff Correspondent LANSING. Mich., Oct. 28.—A month or more ago the Republican managers confidently announced they had Michigan tucked safely away in their pockets. Today they are frantically searching through their pockets to make sure they still have it. Headed by Governor Grosebeck. the party's best vote getters are engaged in a final thorough canvass of the State for Coolidge. Nobody admits there is any danger, but they are working hard to convince themselves. The same situation seems Indicated in Michigan that is found in many othc. States. Early in the campaign when it became apparent La Follette would run second, at least, there was great alarm. Then, when even with vote of that size in sight, there few evidences of great activity on the part of the La Follette followers and even less evidence or organization comparable to the old party organizations the alarm subsided. Confidence on Coolidge’s ability to swing the State returned and only this last week has this confidence been lessened. Meetings Large The La Follette meetings were partly responsible. The Wheeler meetings may cause some further worry, since he was booked for such cities as Jackson. Flint and Saginaw and Lansing, regarded as among the least friendly in the Stte, and he has drawn large and demonstrtlve audiences. Wheeler, in his Lansing speech, touched on one element in the campaign that will help to explain what has happened, in case expectations of Republican managers are upset. Greater part of the progressive %’otes in the coming election, he said, were made long before the present campaign began. It is the culmination of years of progressive agitation accentuated by general resentment against conditions exposed in Washington during the past three and one-half years, he argued. There is reason to believe that Republican confidence in Michigan rests pretty close to the surface. Times are not good. • Many of the automobile factories are running

Only the furniture industry is said to be really flourishing. At Jackson stories are told of manufacturers holding out promises of full time work in case Coolidge is re-elected. Progressive party workers declared also that business pressure has been exerted on men outside the labor movement to keep them from declaring themselves openly for La Follette. A prominent physician had been expected to preside over the Wheeler meeting. When he failed to appear the men in charge remarked they expected something like that to happen. Silent Followers They repeated the assertion heard many other places that the city was full of La Follette voters who were j afraid to declare themselves. And j yet Wheler’s meeting in Jackson i was the biggest mid-day meeting of the campaign, just as his night meeting was the biggest that Lansing had seen this year. The Progressives seem to have ; great hopes of Detroit. While Henry ; Ford continues to declare his oppo-1 sition to La Follette on ground he considers him the Wall Street can- i didate, it is declared Ford's employees are strong for La Follette. A secret poll, according to Progres- j sive organizers taken in one building among 700 Ford employes revealed that more than 90 per cent intended to vote for La Follette.
