EDITOR ATTACKS COOLIDGE STAND ON OIL SCANDAL Villard Declares President Failed to Act Until Forced To. Directly answering assertions of Charles Evans Hughes, Secretary of State, at Cache Tabernacle Monday night, that there was “no more honorable man than Calvin Coolidge,” Oswald Garrison Villard, New York, S'litor of the Nation, Tuesday night It'id bare Coolidge’s inaction in the Teapot Dome oil scandal, when for eighteen months, “the facts were known by every one in Washington.” Villard was speaking in behalf of the La Follette-Progressive party movement at the K. of P. Hall. “Eighteen months before the Teapot Dome scandal finally was brought to investigation. Senator La Follette told the whole story in the Senate while, fifty feet away, sat Calvin Coolidge, the great, the honest. the strong President of ours,” Villard declared. Scandal Traced CooliJge saw the vote taken to *ell for a billion dollars the finest oil lands left in these United States on the specious plea that they were being drained of their resources. ‘‘When he became President he did nothing until Senator Walsh ~m "Pape’s Cold Compound" Breaks a Cold Right Up Take two tab- —ij. lets every three jfZgnnk hours until three doses are taken. iJMKa The first dose a!- civ®*— ways gives relief. vWjEi The second and Ur'"’ 5 ' third doses com- II i * IUSgF pletely break up W the cold. Old Pete, the English bulldog that was the idol of Indiana Ave., for many years is committed to the dog pound the remainder of his life. And he Is insured of kind treatment at the hands of Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Mounts, attendants, who care for unfortunate animals at the animal refuge. As Pete’s master died he had no home. Dr. Elizabeth Conger, poundmaster, found a place for
compelled him to, and even then he continued to associate with Ned McLean and Fall and twice declined to accept Harry Daugherty's resignation, saying that Daugherty's conduct of the office was satisfactory." Villard launched into the Burton Wheeler indictment, pointed out Wheeler’s exoneration by the Senate and declared the whole thing was generally known to be a frame-up between the Republican national committee and Harry Daugherty. “And ‘Silent Cal’ allowed this persecution to continue, he said. “And today he refuses to take any action to lift the indictment from Wheeler's shoulders during the campaign.” Villard attacked John W. Davis from the standpoint of his relations with the big business interests. He cited several cases in which Davis participated to show Davis in opj>osion to the mass of the people and to labor. Viliard declared the arising of the third party meant the Republicans and Democrats, whose parties, he said, no longer could be distinguished between, should combine Into the conservative party and the third j party would become the liberal party. ! him but Pete would not stay there, and in a few hours was back at the pound. Again he was put in a home and heartbroken Pete cried the entire time. Folks could do nothing with him. So, back to the dog pound for Pete. Pete, who is about 12 years okh, is friendly to humans —but an enemy of his own kind. He likes to fight. His teeth are gone; his tusks worn off; his face battlescarred.
son, Villard said the party believed there must he a silent revolution, a recovery of original ideals and a security of the Government from special Interests and for general interests. He championed Government ownership of railroads by pointing out the experience of Canada. In defending the La Follette suggestion that Congress be given veto power over the Supreme Court, Villard quoted from Lincoln to the effect that when the "supreme-power of the land is vested even with the courts, “the people will have ceased to be their own rulers." “The final issue," said Villard, “is whether or not we are to be forced to tie up to two parties who are standing still.” Bah.v Drowns in Bucket By Timrg Special CLINTON, Ind., Oct. 15.—Thomas Robert Vorak. one-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Vorak, was drowned Tuesday when he fell into a bucket, of water. The mother had given the child a bath in a candy bucket and had stepped outside to get its clothes. She returned and found its head submerged. Doctors failed to revive him.
