BROADCASTING IS NOW BECOMING MAKEROFMONEY ‘Who Pays?' Is No Longer Problem in Radio Business. By NEA Service Advertising is making the new business of broadcasting a profitable undertaking. Even from the start, it seems broacasters have found the sale of advertising time a most practicable way of killing two birds with the same stone —furnishing en tertainmens to its listeners without cost and more than paying for the maintenance of their stations. In fact, broadcasters have been coming out ahead in the annual accounting of advertising income and expenses. So promising has this business of radio adVertisnig become that the question. “Who shall pay for broadcasting?” is generally considered answered. Advertisers are paying, and in a most remunerative manner. . An idea of the receipts obtained I from radio advertising may be gleaned from a rough estimate of the business done by the leader in this field. Indirect Reference It is a subtle form of advertising, a kind that permits no soliciting or direct mention of advertisers or products, but requires only a casual reference to a name included in i what is apparently the evening’s en- : tertainment. For this mere mention, j station WEAF collects a toll of SIOO for every ten minutes the advertiser is on the air, and some advertisers have been known to pay SBOO an I hour. And "WEAF, being the pioneer in this field, is so pressed for time by agencies seeking to broadcast their products or propaganda that even two hours a night is a conservative estimate of its daily advertising allowance. That other broadcasters who permit advertising are not losing is shown by a resume of the income and expenses during the year. No Ix>ss Shown The cost of a modern class B radio station is about $65,000. Its upkeep averages around $25,000 a year. Those broadcasters who permit advertising, outside of WEAF, get an average of nr an hour, at the rate of about two hours a night for six nights in the week. On this basis the income runs up to $62,400 annually. Not much of a business, of course, figuring on this low basis- But broadcasting is not intended as a : profit-bringing business by most stations on the air. diagram, it will be noted that the two transformers are crossed, with cne terminal of each primary connected to an ordinary electric light plug and the secondary terminals going to the eliminator. The secondary of the bell transformer is shunted across the filament terminals. The grid terminal of the audio frequency transformer secondary is joined to both grid and plate terminal, shorting these, and the filament terminal becomes the highest B voltage to the amplifier. From the positive filament terminal of the vacuum tube, the con-

nection runs through a 10-henry choke coil, which may be the secondary of a low-ratio audio frequency transformer, from there becoming the negative B terminal to the receiver. Detector Connection The by-pass condensers are shunted across to the amplrtUyr side from each end of the choke coil. For the detector terminal to the receiver, a variable resistance is installed frem the amplifier line, so that the voltage may be controlled. With this done, all that is necessary is plugging the eliminator into an ordinary electric light socket and attaching the three terminals to the necessary points in the receiver.

WIRELESS SIGNALS BENEFITED BY COED Winter Is Ideal Time for Radio Reception. By V/.M Serrlct ' WASHINGTON, Oct. 13.—Cold weather more than doubled the strength of radio signals transmitted during tests made up to recently at the Bureau of Standards here. From these tests and other observations made here on daylight signals from the long wave trans-At-lantic stations at New Burnswlck and Tuekerton, N. J., the enginers of the Bureau of Standards of have concluded that cold weather benefits •radio transmission. | Although signal strength was | found to be quite uniform during most of the year, with the coming I of the cold waves of Janupary, 1924, the signals were observed to rise to | more than twice their normal I strength. I At the same time there were de- | vlations of many degrees in the ap ! parent directions of the sending stations, as Indicated by the radio compass. even in the forenoon when long wave compass bearings are generally free from error. The end of the series of cold waves in January did not at once restore transmission conditions to the uniformity of autumn and early winter but felt a condition of instability which persisted through the comparatively mild cold of February and early March. During this- ttmo the signals frequently fluctuated, going to high values for a few hours and then returning to normal without any obvious connection with weather conditions. After March 19 these Irregularities entirely ceased and transmission again became normal. There is at present no definite explanation of this phenomenon. The cause is evidently atmospheric, say the observers. Standard Frequencies The United States Bureau of Standards has extended the range of its standard frequency transmissions, to be checked up by experimenters, broadcasters and others. The frequencies hereafter will extend from 125 to 6.000 kilocycles, or from 2,400 to fifty meters. It’s a Hushaphone Broadcasting from open spaces where large crowds are assembled requiras anew type of microphone, called a “hushaphone.” St is designed to exclude the shouts and other noises of the crowds while the broadcasting Is going on.

Radio on Farms A special survey marie by the United States Department of Agriculture recently shows a surprising Increase in radio on farms. It Is estimated there are more than 350,000 receiving sets in the rural districts, as against 145,000 a year ago. The radio markets news service, to which may be attributed a laige part of this increase, has been developed rapidly during the past three years until now it is possible for farmers in practically all parts of the county to receive daily market quotations and reports on agricultural conditions.

lON MAY AFFECT RADIO RECEPTION By NEA Service HARTFORD. Conn., Oct. 13—The moon, in its various phases, is believed to’ influence radio reception. Observations made by amateurs and reported to headquarters of the American Radio Relay League here point to this explanation for the different degrees of static encountered at certain timesAt present the only observations made, in this regard, have been on European Tong wave signals, since there have been better receiving conditions on this side of the Atlantic than in England. Further experiments, however, are being conducted on shorter wavelengths directed eastward. According to observations so far ’ecorded, while long wave signals were traveling west across the Atlantic, bad static conditions prevailed while the moon was up, or the moon was in its last quarter.
