WASHINGTON, Oct. 8. —When autumn brings the snow-flurries this year, you may smell l'or the lust time the tantalizing odor of chestnuts being roasted on the street corners. No less an authority than tiie United States Department of Agriculture predicts the passing of the old chestnut vendors with their smoky, fragrant, charcoal stoves, as dear to the hearts of city folks In the Northeastern States as the hur-dy-gurdy men. liest to (’ut Trees Down In fart, the forestry I service lias broadcast to all owners of land containing chestnut trees that they had best cut them down and sell them at once before the dreaded chestnut blight renders the wood useless. Nobody has been able to tint! a cure for this disease of the chestnut trees. Nobody knows exactly how ft started. Since it was discovered twenty years ago in the ltronx Park in New York Uitv, it has spread through southern New Kngland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland. Virginia, North and South Carolina and down into Georgia. There is not a single chestnut three left In Pennsylvania, New Jersey and southern New Kngland now. Trees Kxtinet in Ten Years Within another ten years it is doubtful if any chestnut trees of the original American variety will he left standing. Chinese varieties of chestnut, supposedly Immune from the blight, have beei tried in North ( irollna, but ennno stand the chtn t’.e. Oaks, white ash and hickory are being planted In most forests te replace the chestnut trees which have been wiped out. In northern New Jersey pine is taking their place. A tree known as "chestnut oak” is proving a good substitute from the forester's point of view Death of chestnut trees in some forests lias given new lib- to sui rounding trees. They seem to be able to grow faster wbm the competition of tin chestnut is removed.
