HYING BY INCHES, BUT CHEERS HIS WOUNDED MATES Veteran at New Orleans It "Gamest Guy in World.” NEW ORLEANS, Oct. 3.—“ The gamest guy in the world” is dying by inches. ■ He knows it, too. But he laughs at the doctors when they tell him so. Six years ago Sergt. 'William Thomas Kennedy, Sixth U. S. Infantry, was brought back from France with an acute case of "trench feet” and a couple of wounds. Since then he's been in twentyseven different army and veterans’ hospitals. All told, he's undergone fourteen amputations and another surgical operation. Every four or five weeks they carry him into the operating room again and cut a few inches off his legs. Bill only grins. One of Bill’s legs has been amputated to the knee: one foot to the instep. Both hands are mere stumps of amputated fingers. Though in constant torture, akin, the doctors says, to hot irons searing the stumps of his hands and feet. Bill makes them carry him around to the different hospitals to see his “buddies.” His stories and his words of encouragement make the other fellows forget their own suffering. "He's the greatest morale builder we’ve got,” says Col. Dallas B.
