WARDEN CONDEMNS COUR T PRACTICES E, J, Fogarty Brands Loeb- Leopold Trial as Travesty on Justice —Advocates Swift Punishment,

"If crime is to be checked, if our travesty on law is to be ended, America must first improve her courts.” This is the statement of Edward J. Fogarty, warden at Indiana State prison at Michigan City and one of the foremost authorities on criminology in the country. Fogarty was bitter in a scathing denunciation of the Loeb-Leapold murder triel, declaring it was a travesty on justice and that such jurists as Judge were prostituting the American courts. Fogarty believes the two young slayers of Bobbie Franks should have paid for their crime with death. Slap at Law Enforcement This opinion from Fogarty, who has the reputation as one of the most humane prison officials and whose institution at Michigan City is a model for others, is considered a sharp slap at lax law enforcement In America. "It is the leniency of our courts in penalizing crime that is enticing criminals,” Fo’garty declared. “We must get back to the English method of swift and sure justice before

crime can be checked in America,” he said. What’s the Use? Asked what he would suggest, Fogarty smiled his big genial smile and declared he had a plan. "But what’s the use, they’d think I was crazy,” he said. "They thought I was crazy when I inaugurated my system here, but I want to say I have better order and more of a college spirit at MichiI gan City than they haye at some universities. If I was a tired business man looking for relaxation, I would rather spend two weeks here than at French Lick," Fogarty chuckled. Brook Resembles John Drew Clive Brook, English actor brought to America by Thomas H. Tnee to play in "Christine of the Hungry | Heart.” the producer's forthcoming | rel Case for First National, is a mart of poise and dignity and distinction. He suggests no one else on the screen today yet he is in no sense dazzling or exotic. He is instead just a gentleman. "He reminds one of John Drew,” says John Griffith Wray, "when the actor was at his height as a Charles Frohman star.”
