BRACKEN HOLDS BACK PAYMENT OF AUDIT FIRM Says $1,758,92 Claim Is Spending State's Funds Twice. William Marsh, audit clerk in the State auditor's office, upon advice of Robert Bracken, auditor, has refused to issue a warrant for a claim Yrom the accounting; firm of C. A. Gall and Company, which re cently audited the account of O. F. Schlensker, autc ' salesman, with the State _ pmmission. Claim was for $1,758.92, representing services of TY E. Pedigo, accountant, at $25 a day and three other accountants at SIS a day. Bracken held the State board of accounts was established for the purpose of making audits of State departments and bringing in outside firms is merely spending the State's money twice. The highway commission engaged the accounting firm following an accounts board report on the highway garage in which extravagance and mismanagement was alleged. The board retrieved $50,000 from Schlensker in what they called excess profit on dealings with the commission in sales of auto parts. The commission answered the report with the exception of the Schlensker incident and notified Governor Emmett F. Branch a separate audit would be made. The audit, made public recently, purported to show Schlensker had not made an excess profit and that, in fact, he had overcharged the commission only about instead of the $50,000 charged by the accounts board. The accounts board has asked Attorney General U. S. Lesh for an ponion on the matter of hiring outside accountants by a State department.

WAN TAKES LIFE WITH GAS Mrs. Holland Leaves Note Directing Funeral. Deliberation in planning to end her life was indicated today when investigation showed that Mrs. Hannah Holland, 50, of Apt. 2 of 332 E. Vermont St., had carefully filled the cracks around the kitchen door and window before she sat down near the gas range and turned on four burners and the oven, pbicing a dish containing a cloth soaked with chloroform on the oven door. OFFICIALS STUDY SMALL PARTIES Voting Machines to Be Used, if Possible. State officials are criticizing activity of the numerous independent parties whose appearance on the ballot in the coming elections seems likely to prevent use of voting machines because ofxthe limited places for tickets. Officials characterize the mushroom growth of some parties and the resurrection of others. Use the Australian system of balloting will cause a great increase in expense and will keep hundreds from voting. State election board Is scanning every petition for a ballot place in order to prevent passage in case of error. Maurice Tennant and W. W. Spencer, commissioners, met with Attorney General U. S. Lesh Friday in an attempt to solve the difficulty. Full Investigation will he made to ascertain if nine tickets can be placed on machines mechanical experts of voting machine companies aver that they can.
