VARIETY SERVED FANS AT STATE TENNIS TOURNEY Men’s Doubles and Women’s Singles Start —Tilden and Markey Combine, Variety is the word at the State tennis tourney today at the Hawthorn courts. Play in the men’s singles was to continue and first round matches were scheduled in men’s doubles and women’s singles. Most any kind of tennis one wishes to see is on that program—good, bad and indifferent. Bill Tilden, the famous one, has picked up Bud Markey as his partner in the doubles. It is a Mutt and Jeff combination that isn't so bad at that. But a good youngster. Among the best doubles teams are Hennessey-Chapin, SagalowskyKurzrock, and Kuhler-McKay. Feature Match If Starbuck defeats Parker one of the best contests of the day seemed in prospect when the two local players, Starbuck and McKay, clashed. Hennessey should not have much trouble in his two singles encounters. There are only ten entries in the women's singles. Play was to start this afternoon at 4. In Tuesday's play the upset came when Cox defeated Kurzrock, one of the seeded players, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. It was the best match of the day. Hennessey, who is defending his title as State champ, drew a bye in the first round and was not on the courts. Tilden romped through two matches with Flinn and Bob Bang, former city park champ. McKay Braces Von Burg, the youthful local netter. took one set from Jack McKay, but that was all. The scores were 6-3, 2-6, 6-0. Chapin and Kuhler came through their matches without trouble.
