‘CROOKED DEAL' CHARGES TO BE IGNORED BYWALB Teachers Oppose G. 0. P. Candidate's Magazine Operations. Republican State Chairman Clyde Walb today declared he would take no cognizance of charges against -W. N. Sherwood. Franklin, G. O. P. candidate for superintendent of public instruction, unless further evidence was brought to his attention. Walb declared he did not believe the matter would come before the State committee meeting Monday. Charges of “crooked dealing" failure to keep promises, unauthorized methods of gaining magazine subscriptions and collecting money under false pretenses, were made by representatives of State Teachers' Association against Sehrwood. Identical charges were also made against William E. Blackburn, Indianapolis, co-owner with Sherwood of a defunct educational magazine “Educational issues." Charges against Sherwood will be taken up before a meeting of the State Republican committee Tuesday, Walb said. The Teachers Association was represented by Oscar H. Williams, sorrier State supervisor of teacher raining and now a member of the faculty of De Pauw University. Williams was one of the owners of the magazine, but sold out his interests in May, 192 i. Sherwood and Blackburn are alleged to have collected money for subscriptions to the extent of several hundreds of dollars after the magazine was defunct and its mailing privilege was revoked by the postal department. This privilege was revoked March 29, 1923 for “late and irregular publication and failure to publish statement of ownership as required by Federal statute." The last issue of the magazine was published in October, 1922. According to flies of the Indianapolis Better Business Bureau, the compan> has been under Investigation for some time to endeavor to wind up its affairs, but the records show that no adjustment of complaints have been made. Blackburn in a statement late Thursday declared affairs of the company had not been wound up, and that when they were every cent of money would be returned to subscribers.
