BRICK COMPANY IS OUTGROWTH OF A CONVICTION A, E. Davis, Local Manager, Tells of Development of Yards at Danville, “We considered the brick business worth while, and we decided to destroy the picture of a little ole mule grinding up mud and calling it a brick yard, and we did,” said A. E. Davis, Indianapolis manager of the Western Brick Company, 804 Hume Mansur Bldg. In a little room off the office of the Western Brick Company is a most interesting display of thirty different types of face brick made by them. There customers may select the brick to fit the design of their home and their own particular tastes. "There are always three chief considerations, of equal importance, which enter into every building operation,’’ said Davis. “First, utility, or such an arrangement of the inner parts as to meet the purpose, public or private, for which the building is erected; secondly, strength, or such durability as justifies the care and expense involved; thirdly, beauty, or such attractiveness as delights the eye and satisfies the artistic requirements of harmonious color and form. The architect provides for all of these. The first, or utility, depends entirely upon his skill and genius in laying plans, while the second and third, or strength and beauty, depend largely on the nature of the materials he chooses.” This company has three brick yards at Danville, Ohio, where twen-ty-five years ago a few men, with “the vision of brick,” started a $300,000 concern. The company is now worth more like $3,000,000 and Is probably doing more toward the permanency of communities than any other organization. "It is no small pleasure.” said Davis, “to go down the street and say to yourself this beautiful building and that handsome home are built to stay. They will be standing there long after our work is done.”
