Spider’s Web Is Background for Dance Revue at the Palace
By WALTER D. HICKMAN ■ “"| SPIDER'S web is used as a A background for a dance revi’e called “Spider Web Revue,” with Lucille Ballantine. A spider chases a pretty fly (a girl dancer) into his web. The fly sucseeds in getting its freedom and the dance begins. The woman dancer in this act is a graceful toe dancer, a splendid ability. She is assisted by three male dancers. The act is beautifully mounted. Splendid. Barney Gilmore and company have some rather quiet fun in “Two Pals and a Gal.” Gilmore is well known on the legitimate stage. Three young women sing and dance in the opening act called “We Three Girls.” Allen and Norman have some pointless comedy, but j some good juggling. They do not overwork. Schichtl’s Wonderettes close the bill. The movie feature is “Wandering Husbands.” At the Palace today, Saturday and Sunday. -I- -I- -IOther attractions on view today include Fatty Arbuckle, at the Lyric* “Broadway and Buttermilk,” at English's; William Fairbanks in “Call of the Mate,” at the Isis; “This FreeAGED MAN HEAT VICTIM * Taken to Hospital .After Walking Forty-Five Miles to Orgile, Mis. Dance,” at Mister Smith’s. Herb’s John JOHN DANIEL. II The only gorilla in captivity at the present time is John Daniel, the second. John will be one of the chief attractions with Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey circus which will be here for two performances on next Tuesday. John has just passed his fourth birthday, having been captured In the French gaboon when about 2 years old as near as can be estimated. Miss Alyse Cunningham, an English woman, who is John's friend, mentor and constant companion, was present at his capture and has scarcely been out of his sight since. According to Miss Cunningham, when gorillas are taken alive it is at about that age, the reason being that the natives are afraid to tackle the qlder gorillas. Asa general rule gorilla “families" wilj flee with the approach of a hunting party, the parents carrying the very young along in their arms, but those of John's age are expected to keep up with the retreat of their parents. But often it happens that they lag behind, which gives the natives a chance to throw a blanket over their heads and make away with their quarry. It was in such fashion that John Daniel was captured. John weighs a trifle over 100 pounds and stands 40 inches In height. He has a chest as broad as Dempsey’s, and should he live to the age of maturity—about 15 years—it would be much larger. In their native State the gorilla attains very often an age of between 60 and 70 years and will weigh up to 500 pounds. An adult gorilla has never been taken alive and according to Carl Akeley, scientist and explorer, never will be./ John has never been confined in a cage, nor worn a leash or halter. Human in looks. In actions, in acceptance of service and In his attitude toward man, he is as utterly unlike the dressedup, cane-carrying “monk" of the moving picture and vaudeville stage as chalk is from cheese.
