SCHOOL 6010 * ASKED TO CURB BUILDING PLANS C, of C. Committee Meets With Officials at Conference. Tentative suggestions that the high school building program of the school board be restricted during the coming year in an effort to reduce the tax levy were made by members of the sub-committee of the education committee of the Chambf r of Commerce at a conference with school officials today. m Although no definite recommendations were made by the sub-commit-tee, it seemed agreed that during the coming year only one unit of new Shortridge High School should be built, only one unit either of the west side or colored high school should be built, and the balance of the program postponed at least another year. School board plans called for a bond issue for Shortridge and colored high schools and an 8-cent tax levy for the West Side High School, the work to be pushed at once. It also was suggested by the Chamyer of Commerce representatives all Bgh school construction be financed through bond issues, and that the tax levy cut as far as possible. Use Bond Money In order to reduce taxes it even was suggested some of the bond issue money intended for high school purposes this year be diverted to financing other school expenses in order to reduce taxes. Those attending the conference were Leo K. Fesler. Frank H. Fauvre. John F. White and L. V. Morrison, representing the chamber: R. O. Johnson, business director of the school board: Jacob Hilkene, inspector of construction: Murray Jiahlman and M. W. Madden, representing the school board. The Rev. G. O. Baker, president of the Hawthorne Improvement Association, an organization which has backed the west side high school project, was present, but took no part in discussion. Occupancy by 1926 Hilkene pointed out even if work on the high school was started promptly they would not be ready for occupancy until September, 1926. and that to delay building operations for a year would defer putting the schools in operation just that much longer. The inconvenience and expense of operating two Shortridge plants, should only one unit of the new school be built this year, also was cited as a reason for building Shortridge at one time. The whole matter will be taken up again before the school board at a public meeting on the budget to3*Pht. THIRD ViCTiK OF CRASH Ilf ROVES Husband and Baby Instantly Killed by Traction Car, Mrs. K. ROADS REPORTED GOOD AS RESULT Os RECENT RAINS One-Way Traffic Over National Rd. Bridge at Cambridge City. Rain this week helped materially In getting stone and gravel roads in fine shape for week-end traffic. Surface conditions will be found in excellent condition. The commission’s traffic bulletin issued today showing road conditions for Aug. 23-29, called attention that resurfacing No. 5 between the Har-rison-Floyd County line is completed and open to traffic. He pointed out that while repairs are being made to a bridge on the National Rd. at Cambridge City, traffic is routed over the traction company bridge on which maintenance forces laid a temporary plank floor. Traffic is urged to use care at this crossing, as the bridge only permits one way traffic, and no traffic can be on the bridge when a traction car approaches. Y’aka-Hula Hickie-Dula is once more the craze. Os course, practice makes perfect, and “uke” music really is charming if the player “knows his stuff,” but legislation should be passed compelling beginners to do their practicing In the woods. A queer thing about this most recent wave is the fact that each section of the city seems to have Its own favorite ditty. Now, in the Riverside district “Somebody Stole My Gal” Is the apparent standby, and in West Indianapolis, “You May Be Fast, But You Won’t Last, ’Cause Your Mama's Goin’ to Slow You Down.” North aiders have’to listen to “It Had to Be You.” Thotfgh ukuleles are scarce on the south side, the prevailing ballad thire is “Whose Izzy Is He?
