CROWD EXPECTED TO REACH 250,1 AT FAIRSEPT. 1-fi Secretary of Agriculture Board Predicts Success This Year, William Jones, secretary of State board of agriculture, today estimated the attendance at the State fair, Sept. 1-6, would be at least 250.000. and possibly 300.000. Only 185,000 attended last year. “I also believe that intensive work of county agents and railroad agents in their own communities will bring at least 50.000 persons to Indianapolis this fall who never have been here before,” he said. “For the first time in the history of the fair, special trains of from eight to ten coaches are to be run from scores of Indiana communities. Some county agents are order- | ing three and four trains. Increase in Exhibitors Rain last year held down the attendance record in spite of the 50 cent gate admission, Jones said. “We expected some hard work this year because of the general 1 agricultural depression, but it appears that our publicity work and personal solicitation methods have not only overcome any apathy toward the fair but have made en- | thusiastic thousands of farmers who would not have attended under even normal circumstances,” said Jones. The number of exhibitors already i exceeds the number for last year, i There were 823 last year, and 850 thus far this year. Eighteen States and Canada will be represented by exhibitors. The > States are California, Massachusetts, Washington. Indiana. Ohio. Illinois, Michigan, Kentucky, lowa, Colorado, j Mississippi. Tennessee, Florida. Georgia. Arizona, Wisconsin, Missouri and New York. Improvements Made More than $106,000 in premiums ; is offered this year, as against $101,582 last year. About $500,000 was spent in new buildings at the > fairground this summer, making a j total of $1,750,000 invested in permanent construction in the last four years. The appraised real estate of the fairground is $2,000,000. the appraisers having divided the 214 acres into 1,000 lots, and figured them at $2,000 each.
