Sewer on Top of Earth Rouses Wrath of Shelby St. Residents

; -

OMER BROWN (LEFT) AND O. N. SMITH

A twelve-inch sewer laid on top of the ground and emptying across the curb on to the pavement of Shelby St. in the 2600 block, is causing a storm of protest from residents and business men of the neighborhood. “How'd you like to have a thing like that In front of your door?” asked Omer Brown, 2625 Shelby St., who one day found the pipe rearing Its head like a huge boa constrictor about ten feet directly before his home. The sewer, about seventy-five yards long, starts at two new catch basins at Southern Ave. and Shelby St., less than one block up the slope. It Is laid between the sidewalk and the curb. A neat pile of dirt two feet high covers the pipe until it is eased out of the slope to disgorge on the pavement. “A person will need rubber hoots to get up that walk on a rainy day when the dirt washes onto the walk:” said O. N. Smith, grocer-butcher at 2629 Shelby. “Why didn't the city run it down the street? Couldn't have hurt this rutty old pavement any!” commented another neighbor. “I guess it’s sort of an addition to the sunken gardens of Garfield Park,” said another. Garfield Park Is across the street. “They wouldn't stand for such monkey business up on the north side a minute,” said a third. “All the expenses to drain about

Freeman said the board “would not stand for such a condition,” and promised to ascertain who was responsible for It.
