PROFESSOR SEES TIME WREN ALL LAUGHIS GONE Men of Future Will Know Too Much to Be Amused. By Timet Special NEW YORK, Aug. 12.—Professor Charles Gray Shaw of the philosophy department fiX New York University, predicted recently before a summer school audience that there was little genuine laughter left and that the time was coming when there would not 'be a laugh left in the entire world. Dr. Shaw said primitive men did not know enough to laugh, since wit involves a certain amount of intelligence, and that the men of the future would know too much to laugh at anything. He even told his audience that in the sober peried of scientific and social thought there might be museums that would preserve our Jokes and comics the way we keep the memorials of the stone age. And that case, he said, would be labeled “The Age of Laughter.” Dr. Shaw pointed out that mankind used to laugh at incongruity and inequality: that men used to laugh at Columbus and Galileo and now try to joke about Einstein and Freud. Now, he said, the comic figures of the past are taking leave; we no longer laugh at the old maid, bobbed hair or matrimony, and the Eighteenth Amendment has killed the joke about the drunken man. “In place of such comical figures we keep up a dying laughter by an appeal to bananas and flivvers,” says Dr. Shaw. "Anything for the sake of a laugh. Even men and women are no longer funny and we have to substitute a makeshift by laughing at animals.” He predicts that war and laughter will depart, hand in hand. Dr. Shaw finds there is only one thing to look forward to, and that will be the hearty guffaw of the person who laughs last and therefore laughs best.
‘STANDING ROOM ONLY’IN WORLD, SCIENCE FEARS Professor Warns U. S. May Pass China’s Population in in 75 Years. By Times Special WILLI A MSTOWN, Mass., Aug. 12. —Is the World becoming overpopulated? Dr. Henry Pratt Fairchild, professor of social economy at New York University, and an authority on immigration. believes there is dange-' of it. He says the population of the United States, at its present rate of the end of the twentieth century, would be 55.000,000. or one-third greater than the present population of China. Increase in the birthrate, safeguarded by better living conditions, in 10,000 years, he calculated, would produce more human beings than could be provided with standing room. Untold Billions in 10.000 Years. Before experts assembled to discuss "Population and Related Problems,” Dr. Fairchild produced statistics to show the earth’s probable density of population in future ages. His estimate of the world's population a hundred centuries hence was represented by a figure followed by a series of cyphers that extended into space like the mouse s tail in “Alice in Wonderland.” At that remote period in the future, he said, the human species, if unchecked by war or disease, would number “222 billions of billions of billions of billions,” and each person wouVl have to stand upon only one and one-half square feet in all the earth’s area, including the North and South poles. At present the earth’s 1,728,000,000 inhabitants each has thirty square miles to move in. Many Young Perish “In the animal and vegetable world,” said Dr. Fairchild, “there is no species, however low its rate of reproduction, which could not cover the earth in a very few years if all the young produced could survive to the normal lifetime of the species.” Taking the oyster as/an example, he said its unchecked reproduction in five generations, * starting from one oyster alone, would result in a mass of oysters eight times the size of the earth. He quoted Havelock Ellis, the British expert on animal reproduction, as showing that there exists a minute animal organism which, if not killed off as rapidly as it was produced, would in a short period create a mass larger than the sun. More in U. S. Than World “When he face the question cf dense population,” continued Dr. Fairchild, "the element of standing room becomes important, for standing room takes from the space available for the production of food. To what extent man may enlarge his standing room upward, we do not know. He has produced remarkable results in the skyscrapers in New York City, but we do not know how much farther his expansion in this direction may be carried. “In the United States, at the rate based on the census figures of 1910 and 2920, in spite of war and epidemics, we will have by the end of the century a population one-third larger than, China’s present population. China is always cited as an example of intense overpopulation, but there will be teeming millions in the United States if our present increase continues. About the middle of the next century, at the same rate, we would have in this country as many people as tjjere are in the entire world.”

EUROPE WITH U.S. IN AUTO INDUSTRY Smaller Engine Not New in France, Bv Service LONDON, July 12.—European k countries are stepping along with America in the development of automobiles. The smaller engine is nothing now in France and other countries, and, as a matter of fact, has been a produce of necessity on the continent. The straight eight is another achievement of European auto science, and a third is the development toward the use of prude oil as fuel in internal combus\ion engines. ' An Internal combustion engine, being shown at the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley Park, Is designed for operation on the lowest grade of fuel. It is for stationary use, although it points toward the design of a similar engine for automotive practice. A German manufacturer has come out with a straight eight engine, with all of the sylinders and the upper part of the crankcase cast in one block of aluminum. The distinctive features of this car include fan blades on the flywheel to draw smoke and fumes from the engine beneath the chasses and a dummy radiator that is built to give the effect of a V-type, but has a flat core. In France anew six-cylinder engine has been made for increased speed and with decreased piston displacement, the very features American engineers are developing. Other features are positive valve-closing mechanism, detachable water jacket, supercharger and roller-bearing connecting rods. Fishermen Puzzled WEST PLAINS, Mo., Aug. 12 The many different varieties of fish that have been found in the various ponds in this vicinity have puzzled local fishermen. Goldfish, catfish, bass and crappie have been found in the same ponds. v
