SUNDAY CROWDS , AT PARKS EXCEED 6O,OOOPERSONS fright Day Brings Picnickers to Public Grounds in Throngs, More than 60,000 persons thronged city parks Sunday, making one of the largest crowds in history of the city. R. Walter Jarvis, park superintendent, said today. Clear, cool weather kept Attendance down at bathing hut picnic dinners, family reunions and similar gatherings taxed every available wooded spot. Estimated attendance at Riverside was 20,000 shortly after noon, Jarvis said. Golf courses, tennis courts and baseball diamonds hatl their throng of followers. Riverside and Eroad Ripple amusement parks aC traded thovsands. - ✓ Tourists A-Plenty At Garfield Park, 15,000 were present during the day. Brookside Park attendance was estimate!! at 10,000: Spades Park, 1,000, and at Douglass Park, 3,000. Smaller parks and playgrounds attracted 10,000, Jarvis said. ' Hundreds attended the concert of the Indianapolis Military Band in the shelter house at Riverside from 3:30 to 5 p. m. State highawys radiating from the city saw a continuous line of automobiles over the Week-end. Turkey Run Park, the Shades of Death, northern Indiana lakes and southern Indiana hills were popular haunts. Warfleigh bathing beach. College Ave. and White River, is relieving the crowded conditions at TwentySixth St., Jafvis said. Electric lights have been installed along the beach. Beach Opening Delayed Opening of the beach south of Emrichsville will be delayed until a contract is signed between the park board and the Indianapolis Water Company, probably Thursday. Jarvis said the wading pool offered by John E. King, city councilman. along Bean Creek near Cruft St. and Boyd Ave., was being considered by the park attorney. No report has been made. The casting pool at College Ave. and Fall Creek will not be turned into a wading pool, Jarvis indicated. “This is the only place casting fans have in the city," he said.

Beach Invents New Cure for Romeo; . Rogers Teaches King to Play Poker

Rex Beach has invented anew form of punishment for men who attempt to win married women from their husbands. The remedy is a simple but effective one —make the ten-cent Romeo live with his Juliet. That is the theme of revenge plannded by Rex Beach, author, w’ho wrote “Recoil” and now made into jnovie with Betty B.Blythe and Mahlon Hamilton On view at the Ohio this week. “Recoil" is writtei) by a clever author. He knows how to invent a dramatic punch. Beach really does not attempt a sermon, he merely has created a rather odd story for theatrical entertainment. He knows how to build up a climax, BETTY BLYTHE although his chief characters at no time make any bid for your sympathy because the whole gang of characters are rotters. The chief rotter has than $24,000,000 (and that is some figure) and he spends it like water. His eyes fall on a pretty blonde (Betty Blythe) and he marries her, although she admits she doesn't love him or his $24,000,000. Sad state of affairs. So a Romeo appears on a scene to cheer up the poor old dear who had the burden of spending some of the said millions. Husband discovers Romeo and the Juliet in the case*- so the man who owns the $24,000,000 forces Romeo and Juliet to live together. And that cures both of ’em, but Beach gives the problem a melodramatic twist and again you sit up in your seat more interested than ever before. The theme may seem to lack logic when stated on paper, but the author is so clever at the Job of telling his story that you are not concerned with logic. He gets his characters in an interesting mixun, and, although he has to kill off one of ’em, he manages to give you the regular happy ending. "Recoil” held my interest because it is different, and because it is splendidly acted. Hamilton does fine jvork as the man who is burdened with many millions, and Miss Blythe is not only beautiful, but powerfully

The'funniest scene of the picture is where Will takes the King to an American bar in London and buys George a bottle of beer. Will takes a glass of milk ahd allows that he hopes America will not legislate milk out of existence before he gets back home. Then Will dressed as a cowboy (costume used when he went to court to meet the King) introduces the King to poker. The King** loses every things including his crown. This picture is done in the spirit of polite fun. No offense is intended. It is merely the way Will Rogers gets a laugh out of life while making other people laugh. a pictorial standpoint. The story is slow and not enough genuine romance is present. The desert scenes are beautiful, and when the dance hall scenes are flashed on the screen nothing is left to the imagination I judge these so-called night life scenes are the real article. It’s realism, anjway, if it is not art. The story is at times- so stilted that it gives Miss Terry no acting chance. Novarro is supposed to look and act like a sheik and he does just that and nothing moreft Id all fairnpssj you know that I am not wild over these sheik things. The drama does not put moonlight or moonshine (and that is a poor joke) into my imagination. Be your own judge on this product. Bill Includes Fox news weekly, organ and orchestral selections. There is a natural impish charm about this youngster which will make you take her right to your heart. "She will “make you laugh, cry and then laughsome more. She is a jolly little cutup and she knows how to act and give you the impresion all the time that it is Just natural. In putting a baby in front of the world as a star is no easy task. Baby Peggy has been tested in short reelers. She rang true and still does. The most important thing is to get a vehicle for a wee star. "Captain January” is just the right sort of a vehicle in which to Introduce her as •he world’s youngest star. No betr selection could have been made. Do not think it is neeassary for •no td tell the story. It seems to ne that everybody is familiar with t. You will chuckle when Baby Peggy introduces her pets, fncludng a cow. a dog and a pelican. No expense has been spared to get the right kind of a cast to support the little star. Hobart Bosworth was Just the right choice as lie keeper of the lighthouse, who urned out to be a sort of a father ind mother for a babe washed to bore from wreck during a storm. Bosworth and Baby Peggy made many people wipe away the tears when I was present. When that is done the actors are gettitng over. Bosworth is a finished and careful actor. You recall how Jackie, Coogan played up to Charlief Chaplin. Well, Bosworth has the same fine effect upon Baby Peggy. . _The cast includes Irene Rich, Lin ’coin Steelman and Harry Morey. All know their way about in movij land. -The photography is excellent. The director knew his Job. The whole family will be delighted with this clean and human photoplay. Capitol Ave., which was applauded Sunday by many younger people at a Sunset day service held by the Central Avenue Methodist Episcopal Sunday School. Equally Ignored was Mrs. Nancy J. Van Hook, 1222 N. New Jersey St., Who will be 93 on next Friday. In a hush of respect, these old people mpdestly walked to the platform and received American flags from F. C. Jordan, superintendent, as being thd* oldest people present at the Sunset day service. Although the years have worked Its way into their voices, the two oldest Sunday school goers thanked the “boys and girls” for the honor of being present. Writes Without Glasses When Metzger Vent back to his .chair, I went to his side to get the correct spelling of his name. Without glasses, he asked for my pad and pencil and wrote his name in strong handwriting. “I have barely turned 97,” he said as he tewflerly folded his flag. The oldest man and woman In number of years of being a member of the church were honored also. Mrs. J. S. Harris, 3147 N. Capitol Ave., easily proved that she has been a member of the church for fifty-seven years. Jefferson Caylor, a traveling man, admitted that he has been a member of Central Ave. Church "ever since the church was built.” "How old are you?” Jordan asked. "Figure it out for yourself,” he answered. "I have been a member ever since the church was built.” And that was proof enough to get the honors as being the oldest male member present.

Fifer, pastor, drew an object lesson from old age when he said, "With long ljfe will I satisfy thee.” The ungodly do not go on until 70 and 90 yeans. This is a great lesson. Powdered proteins of the various substances are placed, one at a time, on small scratches on the arm and the reactions are noted by physicians.
