PURSE MENACE SEEN IN CRAIN STOREMERGER Plan Fight by Organizing Cooperatively Owned Supply Houses, Times Washington Bureau, 1.1? 2 .Vfif York Ave. By RUTH FINNEY "WASHINGTON, Aug. 6—Farmers’ cooperative organizations see in the recent merging of fourteen chain store systems a menace to the purse of the man of moderate means. To combat this menace, a chain of cooperatively owned stores in all agricultural districts 'is planned. “Nineteen thousand chain stores have been combined by New York • and London bankers in order that 1 they may get a strangle hold monopoly on supplying the American people with the things they have to eat 1 and wear,” charges the All-American Cooperative Commissiom. Farmers’ Stores Established Farmers’ cooperative stores already established in a number of agricultural States will be used as the nucleus for a non-profit cooperative chain owned by the people themselves to compete with the merger's ■ Stores, according to the commission. This is the most ambitious program yet attempted by American | cooperatives, yet the results already j achieved are startling when reduced to figures. There are now more than 10,000 ! cooperatives in the United States, . which last year transacted a busi- j ness totaling more than two billion dollars. There were 2,600 cooperatives for I the handling and marketing of grain; 1,841 for dairy products; 1,182 for livestock, and 956 for fruits and vegetables. New “Rolling Cooperative” There were roughly a thousand ; cooperatives not only marketing the i products of their farmers, but helping to cut down operating expenses by purchasing home and farm supplies in large quantities. The most novel idea in cooperatives ds now being tried out In Russia. It is a “rolling cooperative,” a store fitted up in a railroad box car. ; It is sent out to remote country j points in order to serve the rural 1 population and it has seen such an immediate success, that on every ! trip the groceries have been sold out before the itinerary was completed.
