IRISH STATE MAY GET AMBASSADOR FROM AMERICA
She Has Arranged to Send Minister to Washington, Times Foreigm Editor By WILLIAM PHILIP SIMMS WASHINGTON, Aug. s.—Unless precedent hitherto universally followed is ignored, the United States will shortly send an American minister to Ireland to look after Uncle Sam’s diplomatic business with the Irish Free State. Ireland has already arranged for an accredited minister to Washington and to date, without exception, the United States has not failed to name a similar official to every country thus represented here. Canada will likely follow Ireland's lead in the near future. In fact it • was Canada who made it possible for Ireland to send a minister to Washington. For some time she has the right to her own diplomatic representative here, but has not exercised it —some say because London asked her not to do so, at least for the time being. Same Status as Canada Under Clause II of the Irish Treaty, the Free State is given precisely the same status as Canada and it was known in London, according eo unofficial report, that the instant Canada named a diplomatic gent to act for her here, Ireland would follow suit. But Ireland has not waited. As pointed out in these columns a year ago, the Irish Free State did not need to wait. Inasmuch as Canada already possessed the right to name a minister to Washington, Ireland possessed the same right, and the mere exercise of it would not in any way carry her outside the limits of her treaty. As long as Lord Curzon was foreign secretary he fought the idea of Canadian, Irish or other British dominion ministers In Washington or elsewhere. Once the habit started, he visioned —as one of his critics observed dryly—a Gilbertian situation, where Ambassadors and such as they Grew like asparagus In May, end pictured the harassed chancellories of the world confronted with a multitude of British ministers at loggerheads on vital points. No Tangle Seen Premier Ramsay MacDonald, however, as his own foreign minister, sees no such tangle. So he has officially advised the” American State Department that his government would be pleased to have an Irish minister accredited to Washington to look after matters of sole concern to Ireland. The American Government has replied, welcoming the Irish diplomat. The British ambassador is to have no control over the Irishman and will not be responsible for his acts, but will continue to represent the king in matters of concern to the empire as a whole. He and the Irish minister will settle between themselves who has the say in case of doubt.
THRASHED BY HIS GOOD SAMARITAN
Virginian Hospitable to Enemy, Thei Beats Him. JBy Times Special RICHMOND, Ya,, Aug. 5.—A Virginian who felt that he had been grossly wronged by another Virginian notified the offender that he ought to administer punlshmnet, but •would forego that pleasure provided that he would never cross his path Again in life. Years passed and, mindful of the warning, a meeting was shunned. One dark, stormy, rainy night the man got bewildered and lost, rode to a light and knocked for admission and shelter. To his astonishment, the door was opened by his avowed enemy, who, when he saw him drenched, bedraggled and shivering with cold, invited him in, gave him a hot toddy, dry clothes and a bounteous supper, had his horse stabled and bestowed him In comfortable quarters. After breakfast, the horses were ordered and both rode away together. A sense of beautitude pervaded the guest and he was congratulating himself that bygones were bygones, and that the outrage had been forgotten, when his host reined up his horse, dismounted and said: “That is my comer tree, yon are no longer on my land and I am free from the bonds of the law of hospitality. I told you that if you ever crossed my path I would thrash you. and now I am going to redeem my promise.*"
