LEBANON HOST TO STATE BOARD OF AGRICULTURE Members Guests of President Barker at New Country Club. By STAFF CORRESPONDENT LEBANON. Ind.. July 30.—Members of the Indiana board of agriculture were guests Tuesday night of E. J. Barker of Thorntown, president of the board, at the new Ulen Country Club, and ate Boone County's prize chicken, heard" Boone County's prize orators, entertainers and a quartette of honest dirt farmers. Boone County citizens were not backward in telling the board members that they intend to go to the Indiana State fair and carry off all the prizes—for the finest hogs, corn, cakes and babies. J. S. Hussy of Zionsville, county superintendent of schools, told how one township in the county had five champion hog breeders of national reputation. Purdue Dean Presides Dean J. K. Skinner of Purdue University acted as toastmaster. He paid tribute to Barker as a real “dirt” farmer, and said that the board should be proud of the fact that it r.ad such a man as its head. The principal speaker was George I. Christie of Purdue. He said the biggest problem of today was to get the city man to understand %he man on the farm. “The prosperity of America is built on the land. If the farmers are reduced to poverty, our banks fall, our stores close, our factories shut down and our people starve.” William Jones, secretary, praised Boone County hospitality. Mrs. Lawrence Vannice of Amo,

ENGLAND HAS NEW GAME Ostrich Feathers All the Rage—“ All Smiles and Feathers.” By Times Special NEW YORK, July 30.—The new game in English society is “Cherchez la femme.” But this time it is not because she is making trouble in some man’s life. It is that she leaves a trail of ostrich feathers across the ballroom floor from the pink or mauve or white fluff around the hem of her skirt and may thus be traced to her retreat by the partner who seeks her. So much the rage are ostrich feathers that English women are described as being “all smiles and feathers.” NEW BERRY DEVELOPED Dr. George Twitchell Succeeds After Years of Experimenting. SSBIISSiSIfIi 4ly Mow .*° Care i|ff | I'X’k BY E.H. SCOTT Some Tips on How to Prevent Trouble The modern automobile, if it is treated properly, gives very little trouble. A large number of the troubles the average owner has with his car are not the fault of the car itself, but usually are the result of unskilled “tinkering” on the part of the owner. In the course of time certain parts of a car will wear and usually this causes looseness which can generally be taken up by an adjustment. Now here is where trouble very often starts. There are numbers of adjustments that can be made very easily by the average driver, providing he knows exactly what he is doing. Ycu are only looking for trouble, however, when you attempt to make in adjustment that you do not thoroughly understand. DO NOT touch an adjustment or alter any unit on your car or start tinkering with it because you THINK it is not quite right. If you do not KNOW for an absolute certainty that the adjustment is necessary or if you are not quite sure how to make it. you will save yourself a whole lot of trouble if you take your car to the service station and have one of their mechanics do the job for you. In this way you will see how the adjustment is made, then the next time the same adjustment is required, you can do it yourself. Sometimes quite a simple trouble develops, but if it is not diagnosed correctly, you can get half a dozen things out of adjustment before you finish. We will say that be- JSeS cause you hold the choker button pulled out too long and choke the l \SX"" cylinders with very rich mixture, the f engine will not start. You give the gasoline adjusting screw a turn then again try to start the engine. VOu find that it still will not start because when you tickled the carburetor you only made matters worse. Now you DO have carburetor trouble, but you DID NOT have it before you tinkered with the carburetor. Well, you say to yourself. If its not carburetor trouble, it MUST be ignition trouble. If you are wise, you will now take out a spark plug and lay it on top of the cylinder while you turn over the engine and watch the plug points. You can then see whether there is any life in the ignition system or not. If there is a spark, you know that the contact breaker and distributor are all right so leave them alone. If you then take out the plugs to have a look at the gap at the points, you will find they are all right. However, when you take out the plugs you allow some air to get into the cylinders and dilute the mixture, with the result that when you again try to start the engine, it will fire. On the other hand, you may decide that the trouble lies In the points of the contact breaker, and take off ___________________ the distributor head and start to HOW ONt SIMPLt TROUBLE CAN “fix” up the points. Better still, when something goes wrong with either the carburetor or Ignition, take your car to the service station and have a mechanic who understands and has an Interest In your car make the adjustment for you. The surest way to prevent trouble. Is to periodically go round and test the tightness of all holts and nuts on parts that are liable to work loose. Take a look at all electrical connections to see that they are clean and tight, and that no wires are rubbing through the insulation at any point. See that the battery is tightly wedged in place. Drain oft some gasoline from the vacuum tank and carburetor tloat chamber now and again so as to remove any dirt or water that may have collected. Keep all parts of the car clean so that if anything becomes loose or broken, it can be noticed easily. .HeXT WEEK—CAMPING AND TOURING TIPS. (Copyright. 1524, by S. N. L. Technical Syndicate.)

SEMI-INSANITY IS PLEA IN DEFENSE OF TIMERS Many Men of Genius Had Same Abnormal Makeup, Expert Says, By DR. MEYER SOLOMON Neurologist of the Chicago Health Department Written for the United Press CHICAGO, July 30.—The defense in the Leopold-Loeb-Franks trial has definitely failed to put forward the plea of insanity as the excuse for the crime of the two boys. Nevertheless. mitigation of the sentence is asked on grounds of the youth of the accused boys, their degree of responsibility and their mental makeup. Therefore, although not pleading insanity, the attorneys for the two defendants are claiming that Leopold and Loeb are of such unusual and abnormal mental makeup that they should be given special consideration—in other words, that they belong to the group of what 1 has been called “the semi-insane” | and “semi-responsible.” Semi-Insane Graset, a French author, has written a book on the subject, and in this hook he refers to many men of genius who had such pronounced peculiarities and abnormalities in mental makeup that he felt justified in classifying them as seml-insane and semi-responsible. The terms "moral insanity” and “moral imbecility” have been used by many to refer to the group whose intellects are normal and well developed, but who are controlled by a perverse state of their feelings, as a result of which they are controlled by strong, vicious or criminal propensities. At the present time the terms psychopath, pychopathic inferiority, constitutional psychopathic inferiority, constitutional psychopath, and psychopathic personality are most frequently used to describe such persons. Some of the traits or characteristics of such persons are mentioned here. Pronounced Defects Their behavior shows pronounced defects in violation and inhibition, marked egotism, impulsiveness, poor judgment, non-conformity to ethical and social standards and Inability to adjust to or profit by experience. Asa result of these character defects, certain other behavior traits are the natural off-shoots For example, the defect in volition results in difficulty in concentration and application to one course of action sufficiently long to succeed —hence so many of them become beggars, hobos, loafers and industrial misfits. Poor control or inhibition leads to crimes of passion or sensual excesses —and so we have many becoming alcoholics, drug addicts, prostitutes and sexual perverts. Fundamentally they show an Impoverishment of emotional life and it Is this which is responsible for their inability to adapt to demands of human society. It should be realized that such persons may exhibit grotesque ex-
