COLORED CONTROL ESTABLISHED AT VETSMT9SPITAL Dr. Ward of Indianapolis Heads Institution at Tuskegee. Timet Washinotqn Bureau, 1322 .Veto York A re. WASHINGTON, July 23—A11-col-ored control has been established at the Veterans' Bureau hospital. at Tuskegee, Ala., thereby culminating one of the most bitter race controversies in that State for years with a colored victory. This Veterans’ Bureau hospital is used to treat colored veterans exclusively, but up until this week supervision had been vested in a white physician. Dr. Charles B. Griffith. Colored organizations maintained the hospital should be run entirely by colored men. Tuskegee whites submitted heated protests and even sent delegations to Washington. The whites insisted the key positions should not ae killed by colored men, pointing out that such a situation would tend to incite race riots. In the early days of the contest, President Harding promised colored organizations that he meant to put in an all-colored personnel. The replacement was so slow, however, that Tuskegee was mainly responsible for anti-Republican comment in the colored press and the eventual indorsement of Senator La Follette by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored PeopleFull authority was vested in Dr. Griffith to change to an all-colored personnel as soon as he thought it advisable. Griffith has Just wired to Director Hines that he has transferred the control of the hospital over to Dr. Joseph H. Ward of Indianapolis, colored, who formerly held the position of chief of the surgical staff. Transfer of the control to Ward leaves but one of the 269 employes at the hospital a white man. He is the electrician and will be replaced by a colored man before Aug. 1. Dr. Griffith also will remain at Tuskegee till Aug. 1 when iie will come here to a position in the Veterans’ Bureau medical division.
OCTAGON NOOSE QUAINTEST PLACE IN WASHINGTON Ghosts Supposed to Live There, Although Architects Deny ft. Timet Washington Bureau. 1322 Xeu) York Are. WASHINGTON. July 23.—Architects are not afraid of ghosts. They have demonstrated this by their twenty-two years occupation of Washington’s famous “Octagon House,” at the corner of Eighteenth St. and New York Ave. During all the time the American Institute of Architects has had its headquarters there, they claim they i have never seen a ghost, and as for the "haunted bell wires,” if there ever were any, they seem to have left off troubling the inhabitants now. Yet the "Octagon House” continues to be one of the first things people want to see when they come to Washington. It is as famous as "The Little Green House on K St.,” or “Ned McLean's Little House on H St.” \ Like the latter, it is credited with having a tunnel passage, leading in this case to the Potomac River. Secret .Doors Admitted There have been stories of "secret panles.” "secret pasageways” and “secret rooms.” The American* Institute of Architects admits that there are secret dpors leading into the back hall and dining room and will point them out if you like. They are some distance from tho actual door and no key-holes, hinges or openings show on the blind side. Wash-boards and chair-boards run right across these doors, making them unnoticeable. Plenty of historical atmosphere still remains in tlife beautiful ojd place. Here it was that Gol. John Tayloe of Virginia, with his princely fortune of $75,000 a year, used to entertain lavishly the elite of Washington and Europe. Presidents came there. Including Jefferson, Madison, Monroe and John Quincy Adams. La Fayette was feted there. George Washington visited the house aften while it was being built, but had died before it was completed. The story of the haunted bell-wires is that all the bells In the house used to- ring mysteriously at a certain hour each night. One skeptical gentleman, dining with Colonel Tayloe one night when the celebrated clanglngs began, is said to have jumped up and .caught the bell-wires in his hand, only to be lifted Mght off the floor as he did so, while the ringings went on. Eventually the bells were taken out and put in differently so that superstitious negro servants would remain in the house. Shape Is Fascinating It is the shape of the house which is so fascinating. The central section is a semi circle, which is flanked by two wings which bend back, angle by angle, until an eight sided figure is formed. President and Mrs. Madison Occupied the "Octagon House” as a “temporary White House” after the British had burned the White House in 1812. It was in the circular room upstairs, now occupied by the secretary of the American Institute of Architects, that Madison signed the treaty .which ended the war.

RADIO PICTURE*. SENDING MADE COMMONPLACE Light Values Converted Into Electric Variations in New ‘Miracle,’ Bv XEA Service WASHINGTON. July 23.—Transmission of pictures by radio, long the subjecCof world-wide discussion and experiment, is at last ready for practical use. Initial installations are now being made and soon the whole United States, as well as other countries, is expected to be covered with a network of radio photo transmitting and receiving apparatus. A company has already been formed here for the purpose. It establishes and operates transmit ting equipment, manufactures and leases receiving apparatus, and is continuing research work for perfection of the machinery. Basic patents have already been issued and others have been applied for. Behind this tremendous advance in the history of wireless is C. Francis Jenkins, the inventor, who is as famous In the motion picture field as he is in the radio field. He has the distinction of being accredited the inventor of the first motion picture projector. The Apparatus For the last few years It has been known that Jenkins had been working on a method of sending pictures by radio. Others, too, have been busy with ,the same idea, but Jenkins’ machine is unique. The basis of the apparatus is a prismatic ring, or disc, anew optical shape in glass, which Jenkins himself designed and can make only by the use of special apparatus. In the sending apparatus, four prismatic rings are combined, revolving across a light beam directed through a photo negative. These rings slice the rays Into strips and convert the light vajues into electrical values. The electrical values are then sent out into space on radio carrier waves, just as sound Is transmitted. At the receiving end, these electrical waves are caught, converted into light and recorded on a photo negative. *"'* Thus one broadcasting station can transmit a photograph to as many points as have the required receiving apparatus, powerful enough to detect the wave of the broadcaster. In this, the photo broadcasting is similar to sonud broadcasting, the distance of transmission being dependent on the power of the station and the strength of the receiving set. Radio Vision Ahead Jenkins expects to gq even further. He forecasts the coming of radio vision and radio movies within a few years. In his laboratory here, five youths are helping him perfect these wonders. Combined with Aidio-radio, Jenkins sees the next generation listening to and seeing plays and events enacted far away. For the present, the Jenkins installation for broadcasting pictures by radio includes the transmission of messages, contracts and newspaper copy by this method. Jenkins has been able to flash 100 words a minute in this way. He predicts 1,000 words a minute within a short time. RADIO PUT* ON TANKS Successful Tests Made With Suitable Equipment. By XEA Service WASHINGTON, July 23—Army Tanks will be equipped with radio sending and receiving sets, according to word from the United States War Department. This has been decided on after successful tests made with equipment suitable for rough usage such as tanks undergo. The only difficulty with these is that the noise while the tanks are in motion is so great that the sets cannot be used. Even while the tanks are not moving, for proper transmission the sets have to be well shielded from metal bodies. U. S. Company Builds In Canada By Times Special WINDSOR, Ontario, July 23.—The Campbell Soup Company, an American confrern, plans to establish a factory in Essex county. The factory may be located in either Kingsville or Leamington.

FISHING BRIDGE = IN YELLOWSTONE BIDS FOR FAME
Claim JVlore Fish Caught There Than in Any Other Place. YELLOWSTONE PARK, Wyoming. July 23. —A little distance from the timbered point where the Yellowstone River flows out of Yellowstone Lake, the stream, is spanned by a low, sturdy bridge, not overly handsome, but ranking with the most famous bridges in the world. It is the Fishing Bridge, where more fish are caught on the hook than at any place in America. Here the tyro, who knows nothing of the finer points of fishing, may enjoy himself equally with the pkilleJ angler. All day long you will find on Fishing Bridge an eager throng, with lines in the water, angling for trout, and very, very few of them go away disappointed or empty-handed. The fishing possibilities of Yellowstone Park are coming to he ap predated more and more every season. Yellowstone Lake, offers the angler a tempting field, lut many sportsmen pass It by be- < ctiuse it is too easy to catch fish there. Many who have fished its waters caught their day’s quota from its deep 1/iue waters in less than two hours. The Lamar River, in the vicinity of Camp Roosevelt, where Theodore Roosevelt and John Burroughs tramped, camped and fished in 1903, is a veritable sportsman’s paradise, fishermen report. The fish are large and exceedingly gamey, and there the angler finds the supreme test of his skill. Some beautiful strings have been brought In by enthusiasts who would rather stay at C i Roosevelt gnd fish than view all scenic marvels of the park. I The streams abound in rainbow, cutthroat, redthroat and .epeckled brook trout, and with Montana grayling, Rocky Mountain whitefish, yellow perch, several varieties of sucker and dace. In the lakes are to be found the mackinaw, the Scotch lake trout, lock leven and European brown trout. There is, as always, great rivalry among fishermen for the largest single catch. So far as authentic records go, for recent years, “Sam” AVoodring, chief ranger, leads with a twelve-pound mackinaw, taken from a hole in the Snake River near the south boundary of the park. But Sam sa'ys he knows that a tourist from Glendive, Mont., caught one in the sjme hole- in 1923 that weighed twenty-three pounds. A record was established in 1923 for trout egg collecting in Yellowstone, when more than 13,000,000 were collected, and more than 12,000,000 planted.
