WOOD SHORTAGE DANGER IS GONE, ENGINEER SAYS Lumber Companies Have' Taken Up Conservation — Plant New Forests, Times Washington Bureau, i 1322 Xew York A if. WASHINGTON, July 16—The conservation idea in forestry has gone over. That awful twenty-years-hence lumber shortage experts have been scaring us about may never come at all. due to progress in conservation. This ray of hope comes from j Austin Cary, logging engineer in the employ of the division of forest management of the United States Forest Service. Cary has been traveling all over the trying to sell the reforestation ideas to lumber companies as a of cold, hard business. They have been responsive, Cary says, particularly throughout the Scuth, far West and New England. Fast in South The main objection of lumber people to tree growing has been that it takes eighty to one hundred years to grow trees big enough for lumber. Cary says this isn’t true j except in the North. Out West and j down South they can grow forests in forty to fifty years. Out in the redwood forests of California they ! already have things planned that when the virgin forests are gone the redwood mills will start in on new forests already planted and growing. In other words, trees will | be farmed. In Oregon and Washington they have standing timber enough to run the mills for seventy years at the present rate of production. Bu*| these States are growing new forests, i too. What about Michigan, Wisconsin | and Minnesota? Cary says. "The Lake States have lagged behind in reforestation. It takes a long time to grow new timber there. They really can’t compete with the South and the West in this way. "These States will not. in the fu- ' ture, be the big forest regions of : the country they used to be. The j land of the lumberjack will be in the West and the South.’’ The Panama Canal, Cary says. . has come in right handy in bringing the lumber of the west coast to the rest of thd country. A billion feet of lumber comes through every year now. ‘‘Artificial Wood” One lumber company in Minnesota, realizing the difficulties of com pet- ! ing with western and southern lumber companies in the matter of re- j forestation, is undertaking to make ! ■’artificial wood.” For this purpqge they use young trees. They reduce them to a pulp— I bark, ’eaf and root —extract the cell- I ulose and make boards of any width, ' length and thickness desired. LEASE IS DISCUSSED Marion Club Fate to Be Taken Up; Sale Date Set. Directors of the Marion Club, Republican organization, were to meat today to discuss leasing their building to the Columbia Club while the latter's new home is being built. Attorney Frank A. Symmes, re 1 ceiver for the Marion Club, ex pressed doubt that anything would result from the conference. Su | perior Judge Clinton H. Givan, in whose court the receivership lies, has set Aug. 4 for sale of the Marion Club to satisfy creditors. Budget Is Submitted A budget of $26,650 for operating expenses of the city plan commission offices in 1925 has been approved and submitted to Joseph L. Hougue, city controller. The amount asked is the same as last year, and will be approximately four mills on the tax duplicate. Estimates of expense Include eight draftsmen, and clerical help in maintaining the office. Two Hurt in Auto Crash By Times Special EVANSVILLE, Ind.. July 16. — Two were seriously injured, when a car driven by Roy Williams, went into "a ditch at high 'speed. GOVERNMENT FISH RESCUERS 'SAVE MILLIONS A TEAR Strange Branch of U. S. Service Works Along Mississippi, limes Washington Bureau. 1.122 .Yric Fork Arr. WASHINGTON. July 16.—More than 140,000,000 lives saved a year, and nary a Carnegie medal. That’s the record of the strangest branch of service in all of Uncle Sam’s long list of occupations—the fish rescue division. The fish life savers work along 'he Mississippi River and its tributaries, where the receding spring floods leave millions of fish stranded in landlocked pools. With the approach of hot weather these ponds dry up rapidly, and were It not for the rescue teams all of the fish would perish. # Last year sixteen tAams of five or six men oach were operated at a cost of $45,000 to the Government. Record Increases For that $45,000 the crews last year saved the lives of 148.000.000 of the finny tribe. The year before they saved 139.000.00 P. The men in the rescue crews live in houseboats and keep constantly moving up and down both banks of the river watching for stretches of water that have become separated from the main river. The foreman of each crew gets paid $3.50 a day and his board and the workers get $3 a day, plus boards Whenever a pool is found the men wade through it with large seines until all of the fish have been taken out. The fish are placed, In large tubs and carefully sorted out. Fifty per cent of the game fish, such as black bass, perch, croppies and muskellonge. are taken to the varlo’lus hatcheries and sent to points in all parts of the country from where requests for fish for stocking purposes have been received. Put Back In River The other half of the game fish and all of the other kinds, such as buffalofish, carp, catfish and bullheads, and other so-called commercial fish, are put back Into the main river so that propagation can be maintained. As the price for black bass fingerlings ranges from S3O to S4O a thousand, it can readily be seen that the sale of these fish almost' pays for the entire work of rescue. Capt. C. F. Culler of the Bureau of Fisheries, who has charge erf the work, testified before Congress cently that if the rescued fish been sold they would have netted $,15,000,000 In 1923.

Burton, Indianapolis song writers, know very well. Burton and East can be relied upon to catch the political swing and set it to melody. —■* This these two men. have done on anew Gennett record. Bur/pn and East got their heads together and wrote “Keep Cool With Cooiidge.” The Gennett people, realizing that the air is full of such things, decided to record the “cool” song. So the Real 'Four Quartet, composed of Willard E. Brant. Winslow, Charles K. Harris and Victor Dannacher, was called in and the record was made. The quartet is made up of Indianapolis men. The harmony is pleasing and the lyric is an out and out plea for peofile to stand by* Cooiidge and keep him where he is. Democratic phonograph may not relish this number, but (he... Republican machines will undoubtedly have this Gennett record. On the other side is “President Cooiidge March.” played by the New York Fire Department Band. It has a regular march swing to it. Each campaign year produces many political songs. It seems that Burton and East have beaten the others to it. “Sweet lattle You” Singing orchestras are becoming quite the apples this season. MADE BOAST GOOD By Times Special GRAND RAPIDS. Mich., July 16. —Frank (“Home Made”) Way, who made good his boast that he could make everything he needed except food, died recently in his self-fitted workshejp, and was buried in a coffin he made a year ago when his health began to fail. Way, who was 69 years old, made his own hats, shoes, coats, trousers and even his own false teeth. In the little workshop, where he had spent an average of twelve hours daily for the last twenty-four years and where he was found dead, he made his own cigars. He was for many years a familiar figure on Grand Rapids streets because of his picturesque horhe-made attire. He earned what money he needed by painting signs.
