INDIANA IS ONE OF MANY 10 SHOW DIABETES DECLINE Death Claims Show Lower Mortality Rate Since Advent of Insulin, Indiana is one of thirty-two States which showed a lower diabetes deathrate among its wage-earr.ing population in cities than the rate among the same group throughout the United States. This fact was ascertained from 1923 death claims of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. The diabetes death-rate for this group was 16.9 per 100,000 persons insured, ndiana's rate was 13.2. The company's latest statistical bulletin calls attention to the marked decline in deaths from diabetes throughout .1923 and the first four months of 1924, notwithstanding the continuous rise which had been recorded in the three years prior to 1923. These reductions have followed the beginning of the more or less general use of insulin. Canada Lowest "Western Canada showed the lowest 1923 diabetes mortality. In Saskatchewan there was not one death from this cause among the company’s 25,000 industrial policyholders. In the United States generally there are more deaths In the North than in the South. The lowest rate of all Is shown In the western group of States. In sixteen central States, bounded by Kansas. Nebraska, Minnesota, Michigan, Albania and Oklahoma, the mortality is below the average for the country as a whole, but there are exceptions. Exceedingly low rates were recorded for South Carolina. North Carolina, Arkansas, Tennessee and Kansas. The highest diabetes mortality in any geographic division was found in the Middle Atlantic States, followed by New England. Racial Factor “There is an important racial factor Involved in diabetes," the statistical bulletin announces. “The above-average mortality in such States as New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Rhode Island is very possibly due to the relatively large percentage of those of foreign race stocks. When there are exceptions to this it is because the States have large numbers of eldrely people in their populations. Such states would naturally suffer high mortality from diabetes because the death rate for this disease rises with advancing age." RALSTON RECALLS FOUR YEARS AGO Senator Read Declaration of Independence at Convention, Senator Samuel M. Ralston vividly recalls four years ago today. He read the Declaration of Independence to the delegates assembled at the Democratic national convention at San Francisco. It was Tom Taggart who called on Ralston to read the document, both delegates at large from Indiana. Ralston demurred, protesting that he was not familiar enough with the document to read it before such a huge throng. Taggart pooh-poohed this cause for exemption and told Ralston he knew the Declaration of Independence by heart. So Ralston read.
