DUSTLESS ROAD IS BUILT ON PART OF BAILEYTOWN GAP State Reduces Railroad Crossing Hazard / and Cares for Traffic, Completion of a dustless surface on the Dunes Highway, State Road No. 43, at what is known as the Baileytown gap, not only assures pleasant travel in the future, but reduces danger at a railroad crossing on one of the State’s most heavily traveled trunk lines. State highway officials pointed out today. The Baileytown gap is caused by delay in completing arrangements for an overhead to bridge the tracks. This bridge, says John D. Williams, director, will eliminate two rail crossings. Negotiations now have progressed to a point when the commission expects to complete the overhead bridge by next year. In the meantime the highway department confronted with a problem of eliminating dust which increased hazards at the railroad crossings by reason of obstructing sight distance, treated the section with a bituminous surface. Today the Dunes highway is carrying probably more traffic than any other road in the Indiana State highway system. On a recent holiday, a traffic count showed fortyfive machines passing a given point each minute. This veritable stream of traffic continued over a period of several hours.
