U. S. IS TO TURN HUGE TRACT INTO GAME PRESERVE Congress Authorises Pur- !“* chase of 341,000 Acres for Project. Tinas Washington Bureau, 1.H2 Site York Arc. WASHINGTON, June 23.—Herd’s some good news for sportsmen! Two experts from Department of Agriculture have started a survey i of an immense tract of iand in the upper Mississippi Valley, which ' Congress authorized set aside for ! largest fish and game refuge in the : Cnited States. Their mission is to determine how much of the 341,000 acres in the ; tract is suitable for agricultural pur- | poses. Ail that is not agricultural j land will be purchased by the Government as-soon as Congress appro- ! priates the money and legislatures of four States in which the territory ! lies voice their approval. 51,500,000 Needed Representative Harry R. Hawes of St. Louis, who introduced the hill for the refuge anticipates no diffij cully in getting Congress to appropriate the necessary $1,500,000 at the next session. The Izaak Walton League of j America, a sportsmen's organization ; formed in Chicago in 1922, has al- ! ready started to educate the State Legislatures of Wisconsin, lowa, Illinois and Minnesota relative to the bill. The declared purpose of the league is to provide a place where game fish, especially the black bass and ! migratory birds, can live and multiply, instead of rapidly becoming ex- | tinct, as is the present tendency. 300 Miles Long The refuge will extend for more | than 300 miles along both sides of j the Mississippi River from Rock Island. 111., to Wabasha, Minn. It ! includes some of the wildest land in j the entire continent. Much of the land is swampy, thus I providing breeding places and food for millions of migratory game birds j each year. The tract is filled with hundreds of small lakes and rivers, which provide natural hatcheries for propagai tion of game fish. The Government already has a : large number of these hatcheries j scattered through the tract, and last ! year sent more than a million black bass to thirty-two States where the ! fish was becoming extinct.

DEMOCRATS MEET TO FILE PROTEST ON REPUBLICANS St, Paul and New York Conventions Strike Similar Note, By LOWELL MELLETT, Times Staff Correspondent. NEW YORK, June 23.—1 tis worth while contrasting this third national convention, which opens here Tuesday, with the two that have preceded it. Delegates an,l spectators went to Cleveland to attend a ratification meeting, and to get what excitement they could out of a convention over second-place national ticket, a place no one appeared to want. They took along their golf sticks and. made their reservations for the return trip before they Started for Cleveland. They ratified, golfed and returned home on schedule. Delegates very few spectators went to St" Paul one week ago to launch anew political party. They saw the new party launched, though it turned out to be a communist party, instead of a Farmer-Labor party. Some of them managed to eat during the three days of the convention by allowing the communists to pay their bills. Another Protest Perhaps the ‘relation of the St. Paul convention to this New York convention is not so well known, but it is important. The Democratic convention is to be be a protest meeting against all that was represented by the Cleveland convention. So was the St. Paul convention. At St. Paul, the delegates both Farmer Labor and communists, were interested primarily in one thing, bread. Judged by what one hears so far here, those who have ! gathered in New York are interested I primarily in one thing, beer. It ! should be added that, as this is written, most of the delegates from the great Mi Idle West States have not yet arrived. Klaxi and Beer The men. who at St. Paul took off their coats on the first day, were desperatedly in earnest about the economic problems facing the country. Many of them came from mortgaged farms, or what is worse, from farms on which they were only tenants. Many came from huintry city homes, their coming being made possibli by the fact that at the

moment they had no jobs to detain them. On the other hand, the folks who are enjoying the entertainment of the great White Way here, do not seem particularly worried about economic problems. There is talk about candidates, but little about principles if c.no excepts the scattered discussions of the Klan and light wines and beer. The St. Paul protest mee'ing. wrestling with serious economic problems, apparently produced nothing that greatly interested the mass voters. The New York pretest convention, may or may net tackle serious economic problems, but it will most certainly try to produce something that will Interest the voters.
